Extended Fishing Report: Friday 2017-09-08


Today’s conditions are looking good probably until this evening with winds southwesterly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable about 10 knots in the late afternoon then becoming southwesterly 10 to 15 knots in the evening. Winds reaching up to 20 knots offshore in the late evening with seas around 1 metre, decreasing to 0.5 metres by early evening. Tomorrow will be a bit choppy early away from coast and easing back for the afternoon and Sunday with winds South to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots shifting easterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon and seas 1 to 1.5 metres on Saturday. So when conditions are right it will be worth trying North Reef were there have been good catches of coral trout, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, hussar and moses perch a 60cm coral trout.. Snapper, cobia and sweetlip on the close reefs off Coolum. School and spotty mackerel on the close reefs between Caloundra and Coolum. Cobia, snapper and grass sweetlip from the 5 mile. Snapper, sweetlip and moses perch from the Blinker. Snapper, Maori cod and tusk fish from Murphy’s Reef.

The Barwon Banks there’s gold spot wrasse, pearl perch, snapper, amberjack, jewfish, venus tusk fish and yellowtail kingfish.
Cougar One’s charter to Double Island Point earlier in the week with the crews catching red emperor, gold band snapper, grass sweetlip, moses perch, gold spot cod, venus tusk fish and also bagged out on snapper. Double Island Point closer reefs and about 15nm and 20nm northeast of Wide Bay Bar have had nannygai, pearl perch and Cobia, tusk fish, good snapper, hussar, moses perch, sweetlip, spangled emperor red emperor, long tail tuna and some big cod

Out from Hervey Bay there’s been trevally, mackerel and tuna in Platypus Bay. Blackall, pan size snapper, estuary cod, the odd scarlet sea perch on the inshore reefs along with school mackerel, cod and trevally off Gatakers Bay. Ín the southern and northern gutter have had the odd coral trout, red emperor, mangrove jack, cod, sweetlip, tusk fish and nannygai. School mackerel from the mouth of the Burrum and river heads. Snapper, school mackerel and trevally off Burrum Heads at the 8 mile, 6 mile Arch Cliffs, 25 fathom hole and Wathumba coffee rock patches. Jew, threadfin salmon and the odd barra from the rocky outcrops, ledges and holes in the straights

Estuaries and Beaches

Fraser Island: There have been dart, whiting, trevally, bream, dart, jew and plenty of tailor in the gutters. A few keen anglers have been targeting a few quality Spanish mackerel well out behind the breakers using drones to deliver their rigged baits and have been landing some big fish. Please remember, that the annual closed waters area runs between Indian Head and Waddy Point from 1st August till the 30th of September every year. So, during the closure period, all fishing is prohibited from the foreshore within this area from 400m south of Indian Head to 400m north of Waddy Point and continues 400m out to sea from the low tide mark.

Hervey Bay: Flathead and bream out from Urangan Pier. Long tail tuna from Urangan Pier. Squid around Picnic Island the rock ledges and weed beds. Summer whiting between Shelly Beach and Urangan. A few feisty tarpon, grunter, threadfin salmon, jew and jacks feeding in Burrum and Mary River.

Rainbow Beach: Tailor, kingfish, mackerel, bream and snapper off the rocks at Double Island Point. Spotty mackerel and long tail tuna from the barge crossing channel. Tailor, bream, flathead and dart along the beaches and Inskip Point. Tailor from Middle rock. Flathead between rainbow and double Island Point. A few flathead and bream from Carlow Point. Barramundi, mangrove jack and estuary cod in Kauri Creek.

Local Dams and Rivers: Lake McDonald has had good schooling bass in the northern facing bays along with Bass and saratoga in the timbers on surface lures. In Borumba Dam yellowbelly are taking lure and bait in the timbers. The odd saratoga and plenty of bass on surface lures. Quality bass in the timbers as well. Good bass and golden perch in the Mary River and its tributaries.

Noosa: Chopper tailor, bream and whiting along Teewah stretch. A few quality whiting up to 40cm on the flats throughout the lower river. Dusky flathead 55cm from river mouthGrunter, bream, flathead and whiting in Lake Cooroibah. Trevally, tailor and jacks starting in Woods Bays. Big flathead and diamond trevally along Tewantin stretch. Cod, bream and flathead in Weyba Creek.

Maroochydore: Whiting and flathead from North shore and the sand bags. Dusky flathead 85cm caught and released between Chambers Island and Bradman Av on Monday. Good bream and flathead along Twin Waters Cotton Tree stretch and in Cornmeal Creek. A 44cm estuary cod caught yesterday as well as flathead and hair tail in the Cod Hole.

Mooloolaba: Bream, whiting and dart in the gutters south of Kawana. Bream and several nice eating size cod (legal size limit is 38cm) from the rock walls. Mangrove jack starting to show up in the canals and in Mountain Creek. Flathead and bream in the La Balsa Sand basin. Whiting in Mountain Creek.

Caloundra: Dart and whiting along the beaches between Currimundi and Dickies beach. Tailor, jew, bream and flathead inside the bar and off the Northern tip of Bribie. A few good flathead and a few whiting from Golden Beach. Trevally and the odd jack in Pelican Waters Canal. Flathead from the mouth of Coochin Creek.
