Local Fishing Report: Thursday 2018-02-01


Strong Wind Warning for today in Sunshine Coast Waters. Also you can expect to have massive strong tidal movements with the King tides associated with yesterdays Full Moon Phase. So do yourself a huge favour and stay in sheltered waters. Please take extra care on the water with the strong run and potential for floating debris picked up from the higher river banks and beaches by the King tides. Wind and conditions today are south to southeasterly 20 to 25 knots. Winds reaching up to 30 knots early morning with seas and swells 1.5 to 2.5 metres. Some improvement in conditions tomorrow with winds southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas and swell still up around 1.5 to 2 metres. When conditions improve which could, be into next week be ready to venture out to the local reefs for some quality reef fish and pelagics like grass sweetlip, moses perch, pearl perch, big coral trout, Spanish mackerel and Venus tusk fish. Snapper, cod, venus tusk, pearl perch, spotty mackerel and tuna from Caloundra 12 mile. Spotty mackerel from the Blinker, Caloundra 5 mile, Arkwright shoal, Sunshine Reef and in the bay at Noosa.

Estuaries and Beaches

Noosa: Yesterdays Full Moon will have the fish on the bite, but take care with massive king tidal movements, exacerbated by big seas and strong winds particularly in the morning tide over the next few days. Golden trevally, flathead and barracuda in the Woods Bays. Bream from the sand bags. Flathead along Gympie Terrace. Good mangrove jack to 48cm behind the Sheraton and on the canals. Plenty of bream and a few good muddies in Weyba Creek. Good mud crabs throughout the upper river.

Maroochydore: Trevally and flathead in the Cod Hole. Tailor, bream and flathead from the river mouth. Mangrove jack in creeks and the upper reaches. Bream, flathead and cod from Bli Bli bridge. Mud crabs in the middle reaches, creeks and canals.

Mooloolaba: Whiting and bream in the surf at Mooloolaba Spit. Bream and giant trevally from the boat moorings. Bream and flathead from La Balsa Basin. Mangrove jack in Kawana Waters. Trevally and cod from Parrearra weir.

Caloundra: Grass sweetlip from Moffat Head and kings Beach. Bream and sweetlip from Shelly Beach. Jew and flathead in the deeper holes of northern passage. A few quality whiting feeding on the flats throughout the passage. Muddies and jacks in Coochin Creek.

Peter Allen went fishing in the lower Maroochy River yesterday, where he released one and kept this quality 60cm dusky flathead.
