Local Fishing Report: Friday 2015-12-18

Offshore

Conditions will be a bit choppy with winds southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres. There’s been couple of good pearl perch taken on a Trekka 2 charter to North Reef. Quality jew or mulloway on a Cougar One charter to Chardon's Reef. Top catch Charters report good catches on The Barwon Banks, Murphy’s reef and the Gneerings, with the banks has been reliable as always especially for the pelagic species like mahi mahi, wahoo and some little yellow fin and blue fin tuna. The bottom fished well for red throat emperor, maori cod, moses perch, fusilier, amberjack, spangled emperor, squire, tusk fish and the odd big cod. In closer we have been getting squire, tusk fish, moses perch, hussar, coral trout, sweetlip, maori cod and spotted mackerel.

Estuaries

Noosa: A few good whiting along the Noosa north shore. A good 48cm mangrove jack was caught yesterday at the Tewantin Ski Run. Quality flathead to 78cm caught and released around Munna Point on whole prawn baits. There's been plenty of good trevally, a few whiting to 29cm using live worms and flathead caught on soft plastics in the late afternoon at Woods Bay. Weyba Creek is producing Moses perch, estuary cod, bream, whiting and flathead all in good numbers. A few sand and mud crabs in the mid to upper reaches.

Maroochydore: Try for whiting up to 34cm in the early mornings Picnic Point, Chambers Island and Channel Island. Plenty of herring bait fish in big numbers around Chambers island and in the mouth of Maroochy Waters Canal. Mangrove jack and 35cm bream in the Maroochy Waters canal. Flathead and bream in numbers in the mouth of Eudlo Creek with mangrove jack and gar in the upper reaches and through Petrie Creek. Mud crabs in the upper reaches.

Kawana: A few whiting and dart along the beaches and you could try for jew over night. Whiting, golden trevally, bream and gar from the boat mooring and in the Kawana canals. Trevally along the rock walls around the river mouth. A few big flathead and whiting in the sand basin. Mangrove jack yesterday, trevally and flathead caught in Mountain Creek, in and around the bridge pylons and snaggy banks.

Caloundra: Dart and flathead along the beaches as well as trevally near the Bar. Golden Beach and the mouth of Bells Creek both producing a few good whiting, with flathead and jew in the drop offs and deeper holes around the Passage. Trevally in the canals and mangrove jack around the bridge pylons and rock walls.

Local Fishing Report: Thursday 2015-12-17

Offshore

May be okay conditions early ahead of choppy in the afternoon to rough conditions by evening with winds east to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots, increasing to 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon, and to 20 to 25 knots in the evening and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres by early evening. Offshore

Pretty good conditions today with winds southeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending easterly in the late evening. and seas below 1 metre. Conditions tomorrow will be similar with an easterly for most of the day around 10 knots and seas under 1 metre, There’s been Wahoo, blue fin tuna, a few spotty and Spanish mackerel showing up on many of the close in reefs, with a quality Spanish mackerel taken on yesterday morning's Cougar One charter to North Reef. Scarlet sea perch or large mouth nannygai on Chardon's Wide. Quality gold spot cod, pearl perch, mowong, sea bream, grass sweetlip, squire, moses perch and bonito at North Reef. The nine mile and twelve mile at Caloundra produced mackerel, cobia, sweetlip, tusk fish, hussar, squire, pearl perch and estuary cod while big marlin were spotted at the Inner Gneerings.

The nine mile and twelve mile at Caloundra produced mackerel, cobia, sweetlip, tusk fish, hussar, squire, pearl perch and estuary cod while big marlin were spotted at the Inner Gneerings.

Top Catch Charters has had some great catches with pelagics in good numbers of mahi mahi from the banks and the 50m line, also on the banks are tuna, mackerel, cobia, red throat emperor, maori cod, squire, coronation trout, tusk fish, fusilier, trevally and amberjack. There's a few good spotty and spanish mackerel showing up on local reefs. A 12kg northern bluefin or longtail tuna taken at Big Hall's Reef. North Reef's had moses perch, venus tusk fish, mowong, grass sweetlip, teraglin jewfish, one snapper, sea bream, Maori cod, gold spot cod and pearl perch.

Estuaries

Noosa: A few good dart and whiting along Teewah Beach. Plenty of mangrove jack have been caught with some released throughout the river system at present. There's been some big flathead caught and released in the Woods Bay and between Tewantin Marina and Makepeace Island. There's been plenty of good flathead, bream, whiting and trevally at the Noosa River mouth. In Weyba Creek there's quality flathead and a few quality sand crabs and mud crabs in the mid to upper reaches.

Maroochydore: Estuary cod, flathead and mangrove jack in Maroohy Waters canal. A few good flathead, mangrove jack and jew at night in the Cod Hole. Caloundra: Dart, bream and flathead along the beaches as well as trevally and queenfish on the Happy Valley side of the Bar. Whiting in Currimundi lake and jack in Currimundi creek. Whiting off Golden Beach and Bells Creek mouth, flathead along the drop offs and jew in the deeper holes in the Passage, mangrove jack around the bridge pylons and rock walls and trevally in the canals.

Offshore

Winds will be easterly at 10-15 knots with seas are below 1 metre. Top Catch Charters has had some great catches with pelagics in good numbers of mahi mahi from the banks and the 50m line, also on the banks are tuna, mackerel, cobia, red throat emperor, maori cod, squire, coronation trout, tusk fish, fusilier, trevally and amberjack. There's a few good spotty and spanish mackerel showing up on local reefs. A 12kg northern bluefin or longtail tuna taken at Big Hall's Reef. North Reef's had moses perch, venus tusk fish, mowong, grass sweetlip, teraglin jewfish, one snapper, sea bream, Maori cod, gold spot cod and pearl perch.

Estuaries

Noosa: A few good dart and whiting along Teewah Beach. Plenty of mangrove jack have been caught with some released throughout the river system at present. There's been some big flathead caught and released in the Woods Bay and between Tewantin Marina and Makepeace Island. There's been plenty of good flathead, bream, whiting and trevally at the Noosa River mouth. In Weyba Creek there's quality flathead and a few quality sand crabs and mud crabs in the mid to upper reaches.

The crew from Top Catch Charters have been catching some nice grass sweetlip and snapper from the Caloundra 12 mile lately.

Condition are finally easing back today with southeasterly winds blowing 10 to 15 knots turning east to northeasterly below 10 knots in the morning. Seas are below 1 metre. Spotty mackerel are starting to show up on wide reef north of Noosa and off the Barwon Banks now. The crew on Top Catch boated a few on a recent charter.
