Local Fishing Report: Friday 2015-10-16

Offshore

Great offshore conditions with winds easterly 10 to 15 knots. Seas are around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres inshore during the morning.  Trekka 2 fished North Reef yesterday for pearl perch, striped sea perch, moses perch, venus tusk fish, sea bream, grass sweetlip and squire. Spanish mackerel at the Mooloolaba Blinker. Coral trout, snapper, moses perch and grassy sweetlip at Currimundi Reef, at Caloundra 12 and 8 Mile. Snapper, tusk fish, pig fish and sweetlip on Murphy's Reef. Snapper from Coolum reef.

Estuaries

Noosa: An 86cm greenback tailor was taken off Marcus Beach on Wednesday night. A few quality whiting showing up in the lower river. Plenty of flathead good trevally to 60cm in Woods Bay. A few big flathead, plenty of bream, whiting, cod and moses perch in Weyba Creek. Mangrove jack in the deep holes in Noosa Sound and Woods Bay. A few sand crabs in the lower river and mud crabs in the Lakes.

Maroochydore: There's dart, tarwine and the odd tailor along Maroochy North Shore. An 80cm+ hairtail was caught in the Cod Hole Yesterday. The herring baitfish are schooling up around Chambers Island and the Cod hole. There's trevally to 2.9kg yesterday and school jew the day before in the Cod Hole. Flathead throughout the river at present. Cod, trevally and tailor in Maroochy Waters. Whiting early morning from Picnic Point and Black banks. Mangrove jack in Petrie creek. Sand crabs in the lower river.

Kawana: Try for school mackerel along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. Good trevally from the boat mooring and bright water stretch. Flathead and whiting in the sand basin. Mangrove jack in the middle river around the snaggy banks. Good catches of quality sand crabs in the lower reaches of the Mooloolah River.

Caloundra: Tarwhine and whiting in the gutters from Currimundi to Wurtulla and worth a try for jew on top of the tide on the tip Bribie. Quality flathead on the drop offs and sand banks in the top end of the Passage. Queenfish, trevally a few mangrove jack in the canals and creeks and bream along The Boardwalk. A few good whiting starting to feed in the passage. Catches of sand crabs in the passage and muddies in the creeks.

Rob Whiting 4th big trevally

Robert Whiting from England landed another feisty 3kg trevally from the Cod Hole on Wednesday and an 80cm hairtail yesterday.

Spanish mackerel at the Mooloolaba Blinker. Coral trout, snapper, moses perch and grassy sweetlip at Currimundi Reef, at Caloundra 12 and 8 Mile. Snapper, tusk fish, pig fish and sweetlip on Murphy's Reef. Snapper from Coolum reef.

Estuaries

Kaian Thompson Tuna Kingfish

Have a look at keen young angler Kaian Thompson who fished with his family off Mooloolaba last Sunday for yellow finned tuna and a kingfish. They also caught a Mac tuna, another two kingfish and a Spanish mackerel!

Caloundra: Tarwhine, bream and whiting in the gutters from Currimundi to Wurtulla, jew on top of the tide at the northern end of Bribie. Offshore

May be okay, however conditions will become a bit choppy  with northerly 10 to 15 knots, reaching up to 20 knots inshore early in the morning. Winds turning northeasterly in the afternoon. Seas are 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing below 1 metre during the morning.  Trekka 2 fished North Reef Sunday for moses perch, pearl perch, squire, grass sweetlip, coral cod, sea bream and gold spot cod. Spanish mackerel at the Mooloolaba Blinker. Coral trout, snapper, moses perch and grassy sweetlip at Currimundi Reef, at Caloundra 12 and 8 Mile, snapper and tuskfish on Murphy's Reef.

Whiting along the Twin Water stretch on high tide and up around Bli Bli channel markers. Mangrove jack caught and released in Petrie creek over the weekend.

Kawana: Tailor, bream and school mackerel along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. Big golden trevally from the boat mooring and bright water stretch. Ari Innes 34cm Caught All By Himself

Little 4 years old Ari Innes caught this 34cm whiting on the first drop - all by himself! It was their new boat record for whiting. They were fishing in the Maroochy River and also caught several bream

Offshore

Okay conditions early, then becoming choppy for the afternoon with a northerly wind about 10 knots increasing to 15 to 20 knots in the middle of the day. Seas are below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon.  At the Jew Shoal where there's been 4kg cobia and the 8kg yellow fin tuna and spanish mackerel at the Mooloolaba Blinker. Coral trout, snapper, moses perch and grassy sweetlip at Currimundi Reef, at Caloundra 12 and 8 Mile, snapper and tuskfish on Murphy's Reef.

Estuaries

Noosa: A 98cm flathead was caught and released while drifting a pilchard in the lower estuary. Still the odd tailor and quality whiting in the lower river. Quality trevally to 60cm and flathead in Woods Bay. A few big flathead, plenty of bream, whiting, cod and moses perch in Weyba Creek. Mangrove jack in the deep holes in Noosa Sound and Woods Bay. A few sand crabs in the lower river and mud crabs in the Lakes.

Maroochydore: There's dart and the odd tailor along Maroochy North Shore. There's trevally to 65cm and tailor to 76cm in the Cod Hole. Good catches of big flathead throughout the river at present from the creek mouths, Bli Bli and the river mouth. Whiting along the Twin Water stretch on high tide and up around Bli Bli channel markers. Good numbers of sand crabs between Goat Island and the cod hole.

Kawana: Tailor, bream and school mackerel along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. Big golden trevally from the boat mooring and bright water stretch. Flathead and whiting in the sand basin. Mangrove jack to 54cm in the middle river around the snaggy banks. A few good size whiting showing up around Mountain Creek. Good catches of quality sand crabs in the lower reaches of the Mooloolah River.

Choppy conditions today, so be prepared to stay in close or in the bays, with winds easterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre around midday. As conditions improve possibly later today and definitely tomorrow try at the Jew Shoal where there's been 4kg cobia and the 8kg yellowfin tuna and spanish mackerel at the Mooloolaba Blinker. Coral trout, snapper and moses perch at Caloundra 12 Mile and snapper and tuskfish on Murphys Reef.

Estuaries

Noosa: Grant Budd caught and released a 98cm flathead while drifting a pilchard in the lower estuary. Still the odd few tailor and quality whiting in the lower river. Quality trevally 40 and 60cm and flathead in Woods Bay. A few big flathead and still plenty of bream in Weyba Creek. Mangrove jack in the deep holes in Noosa Sound and Woods Bay. A few sand crabs in the lower river and mud crabs in the Lakes.

Maroochydore: There's dart and the odd tailor along Maroochy North Shore. Yesterday, Robert Whiting caught a couple more trevally near the Cod Hole and missed a huge tailor bigger than his last one. He was using a large live silver biddy for bait, but slack line allowed it to spit the bait and hooks. Trevally to 65cm and the odd big tailor bream in the Cod Hole. Good catches of big flathead throughout the river at present. Mud crabs in the upper and sand crabs in the lower river. Whiting along the Twin Water stretch on high tide and up around Bli Bli.

Kawana: Bream along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth, flathead and whiting in the lower reaches. Try for mangrove jack around the rock walls and bridges. A few good size whiting showing up around Mountain Creek. Good catches of quality sand crabs in the lower reaches of the Mooloolah River

Caloundra: Good flathead on both sides of Caloundra Bar and on the drop offs and sand banks in the top end of the Passage. Whiting on the banks off Golden Beach. Bream and a few mangrove jack showing up in the canals and a few mangrove jack on live bait and lures in Bells Creek. Whiting and flathead in Coochin Creek. Some good catches of sand crabs in the passage and muddies in the creeks.

Quality trevally 40 and 60cm and flathead in Woods Bay. A few big flathead and still plenty of bream in Weyba Creek. Mangrove jack in the deep holes in Noosa Sound and Woods Bay. A few sand crabs in the lower river and mud crabs in the Lakes.

Offshore

Good conditions out on the water again today with perhaps a bit of northerly chop later, with winds east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending southeasterly in the late evening and seas below 1 metre, increasing to around 1 metre by early evening. Warren Norup was using slimy mackerel at Jew Shoal while fishing from his kayak on Sunday and landed a 4kg cobia and the 8kg yellowfin tuna for his effort . Spanish mackerel at the Mooloolaba Blinker, small black marlin wide of the Barwon Banks. Coral trout, snapper and moses perch at Caloundra 12 Mile and snapper and tuskfish on Murphys Reef. A few good quality coral trout and grassy sweetlip at Sunshine Reef. North Reef has had good snapper, moses perch, mowong, grass sweetlip, pearl perch, Maori cod and lots of small hussar. The Barwon Banks has had gold band snapper, venus tusk fish, moses perch, spangled emperor, lots of squire and some quality snapper. Parrot and grass sweetlip from the gneerings.

Estuaries

Noosa: Several catches of flathead measuring 76cm + caught and released and golden trevally to 70cm yesterday at the river mouth. Still the odd few tailor and quality whiting in the lower river. Quality trevally 40 and 60cm and flathead in Woods Bay. A 69cm flathead on a whole prawn bait taken in Weyba Creek yesterday. Mangrove jack in the deep holes in Noosa Sound and Woods Bay. A few sand crabs in the lower river and mud crabs in the Lakes.

Maroochydore: There's been the odd tailor along Maroochy North Shore. Giant trevally, cale cale, the odd tailor bream and school jew in the Cod Hole. Mangrove jack from the rocks bars in Petrie Creek. Good catches of big flathead which have to be released, in the Petrie Creek, Bli Bli and Chambers Island areas. Mud crabs between Bli Bli Islands and Coolum Creek, also up Petrie creekalong with a few good sand crabs. Whiting along the Twin Water stretch on high tide.

Kawana: Tailor off Pt Cartwright. Good catches of quality sand crabs in the lower reaches of the Mooloolah River. Bream along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth, flathead and whiting in the lower reaches and mangrove jack around the rock walls and bridges. A few good size whiting showing up around Mountain Creek.

Caloundra: A few tailor off the rocks at Kings Beach, flathead on both sides of Caloundra Bar, sand whiting on the banks off Golden Beach. Bream and a few mangrove jack showing up in the canals and a few mangrove jack on live bait and lures in Bells Creek. Good quality flathead along the drop offs throughout the Passage. Whiting and flathead in Coochin Creek. Some good catches of sand crabs in the passage and muddies in the creeks.

Another lovely day with great conditions out on the water with winds variable about 10 knots becoming easterly 10 to 15 knots in the early afternoon and seas below 1 meter. Our mate, Warren Norup was using slimy mackerel at Jew Shoal while fishing from his kayak on Sunday and converted them, into a 4kg cobia and the 8kg yellowfin tuna . Spanish mackerel at the Mooloolaba Blinker, small black marlin wide of the Barwon Banks. Coral trout, snapper and moses perch at Caloundra 12 Mile and snapper and tuskfish on Murphys Reef. A few good quality coral trout and grassy sweetlip at Sunshine Reef. North Reef has had good snapper, moses perch, mowong, grass sweetlip, pearl perch, Maori cod and lots of small hussar. The Barwon Banks has had gold band snapper, venus tusk fish, moses perch, spangled emperor, lots of squire and some quality snapper. Parrot and grass sweetlip from the gneerings.

Noosa: Several catches of flathead measuring 76cm + caught and released at the river mouth. Still the odd few tailor and quality whiting in the lower river. Quality trevally 40 and 60cm and flathead in Woods Bay. Try for queenfish and flathead up around Tewantin. Mangrove jack in the deep holes in Noosa Sound and Woods Bay. Bream, whiting and trevally at the entrance to Lake Cooroibah and mud crabs in the Lakes.

Maroochydore: There's been tailor in the evenings and whiting and flathead through the day Maroochy North Shore. Giant trevally, cale cale, the odd tailor bream and school jew in the Cod Hole. Mangrove jack from the rocks bars in Petrie Creek. Good flathead in Petrie Creek, Bli Bli and Chambers Island. Mud crabs between Bli Bli Islands and Coolum Creek, also up Petrie creek. Whiting along the Twin Water stretch on high tide.

Bream, whiting and trevally at the entrance to Lake Cooroibah and mud crabs in the Lakes.

Local Fishing Report: Sunday 2015-10-04

Offshore

Another beautiful day to get out on the water with winds southeasterly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable about 10 knots in the morning. Seas will be below 1 metre. Even better tomorrow with winds  variable about 10 knots. Spanish mackerel at the Mooloolaba Blinker, small black marlin wide of the Barwon Banks. Coral trout, snapper and moses perch at Caloundra 12 Mile and snapper and tuskfish on Murphys Reef. A few good quality coral trout and grassy sweetlip at Sunshine Reef. North Reef has had good snapper, moses perch, mowong, grass sweetlip, pearl perch, Maori cod and lots of small hussar. The Barwon Banks has had gold band snapper, venus tusk fish, moses perch, spangled emperor, lots of squire and some quality snapper. Parrot and grass sweetlip from the gneerings.

Estuaries

Noosa: An 87, 80 and 76cm flathead caught and released at the river mouth on a prawn and white bait yesterday. There's a few tailor and quality whiting in the lower river. Trevally and flathead in Woods Bay. Good queenfish and flathead up around Tewantin. Mangrove jack in the deep holes in Noosa Sound and Woods Bay. Bream, whiting and trevally at the entrance to Lake Cooroibah and mud crabs in the Lakes.

Maroochydore: There's been tailor in the evenings and whiting and flathead through the day Maroochy North Shore. Giant trevally, cale cale, tailor to 65cm, bream to 32cm and school jew in the Cod Hole. Mangrove jack from the rocks bars in Petrie Creek. Good flathead in Petrie Creek, Bli Bli and Chambers Island. Mud crabs between Bli Bli Islands and Coolum Creek, also up Petrie creek. Whiting along the Twin Water stretch on high tide.

Kawana: Tailor off Pt Cartwright. Good catches of quality sand crabs in the lower reaches of the Mooloolah River. Bream along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth, flathead and whiting in the lower reaches and mangrove jack around the rock walls and bridges.

Caloundra: A few tailor off the rocks at Kings Beach, flathead on both sides of Caloundra Bar, sand whiting on the banks off Golden Beach. Bream and a few mangrove jack showing up in the canals and a few mangrove jack on live bait and lures in Bells Creek. Good quality flathead along the drop offs throughout the Passage. Whiting and flathead in Coochin Creek. Some good catches of sand crabs in the passage and muddies in the creeks.

Offshore

Another good day to get out early with winds southeasterly 10 to 15 knots, reaching up to 20 knots north of Maroochydore during the day. Seas will be 1 to 1.5 metres. A few good quality coral trout and grassy sweetlip at Sunshine Reef. North Reef has had good snapper, moses perch, mowong, grass sweetlip, pearl perch, Maori cod and lots of small hussar. Still a few good bream and golden trevally from the moorings, rock walls and lower river with better quality fish over night. Trevally, flathead and mud crabs in Mountain Creek and the canals. Golden Trevally, around Minyama Island. Jew over night, whiting and try for mangrove jack around McKenzies Bridge.

Caloundra: Bream and a few mangrove jack showing up in the canals and a few mangrove jack on live bait and lures in Bells Creek. Good quality flathead along the drop offs throughout the Passage. Whiting and flathead in Coochin Creek. Whiting opposite the mouth of Bells Creek. Some good catches of sand crabs in the passage and muddies in the creeks.
