Local Fishing Report: Tuesday 2016-08-30

Offshore

Looks like good conditions with winds blowing easterly at 10 to 15 knots, with seas and swell both around the 1m mark. The Barwon Banks has been producing some quality snapper, amberjack, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, moses perch, cobia or black kingfish, gold spot wrasse and Maori cod.  Pearl perch and snapper at Caloundra wide, snapper on the Barwon Banks, coral trout at Sunshine Reef, amberjack, yellowtail king, pearl perch and small snapper at Murphys Reef. Pearl perch, moses perch, tusk fish and snapper from North Reef. Good snapper on Sunshine Reef. There have been, pearlies, tusk fish and snapper from Murphy’s. School mackerel, tuna, snapper and sweetlip off Coolum Reef. Jew and grass sweetlip from Raper Shoal.

Estuaries

Noosa: There’s been plenty of good quality flathead caught and released, a few trevally, the odd tailor and bream in the lower river and around Woods Bay and the Sound. Big flathead in and a few trevally in Weyba Creek. Still luderick and bream from around the river mouth car park rocks. Worth getting the crab pots into action again.

Maroochydore: Tailor, jew and bream off the beach north of the river mouth. Whiting and flathead from Goat Island. Bream and trevally around the Cod Hole area and up along Oyster Bank Road. Flathead off Chambers Island and 72cm from near cruise Maroochy and from Eudlo and Petrie creek mouths. Jew in the middle and upper reaches.

Kawana: Tailor, trevally and bream off the rock walls. Golden trevally and a few GT’s in the Kawana Canals. Bream, gar and trevally around the boat moorings and rock walls, also flathead in the Basin and bream around the trawler moorings.. Sand crabs from the sand basin, throughout the river and canals systems.

Caloundra: Plenty of bream and flathead to be had throughout the Passage. Luderick, bream and trevally off the boardwalk. Trevally and tailor in Pelican Waters Canal. Flathead from Military Jetty. Jew and bigger bream at night in the deeper hole of the northern passage. Mud crabs beginning to move about and feed.

Karl Wortmann caught and released this 69cm jew using fresh mullet fillet for bait early Saturday morning in the Maroochy River.

Looks like good conditions with winds variable about 10 knots becoming southeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon then tending easterly in the late evening and seas will be below 1 metre, increasing to around 1 metre by early evening. Turning southeasterly in the late afternoon and seas 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 metre around midday. Tomorrow better conditions with east to southeasterly about 10 knots increasing to 10 to 15 knots during the evening. . Strong Wind Warning today for Sunshine Coast Waters. The  winds will be west to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots turning southwesterly 15 to 25 knots before dawn. Reaching up to 30 knots offshore during the morning. Seas will be 1.5 to 2.5 metres. The southwesterly conditions could be deceptive in close but fairly rough out wide, so be cautious and stay in sheltered waters. However, when conditions improve later into the weekend so be prepared to chase pearl perch, moses perch, tusk fish and long tail tuna from North Reef. Good snapper on Sunshine Reef. There have been, pearlies, tusk fish and snapper from Murphy’s. School mackerel, tuna, snapper and sweetlip off Coolum Reef. Jew and grass sweetlip from Raper Shoal. Strong Wind Warning today for Sunshine Coast Waters early today with better conditions this afternoon. The  winds will be north to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 30 knots offshore during the morning and early afternoon. Winds shifting southwesterly in the early afternoon then becoming variable about 10 knots in the late afternoon. Seas will be 1.5 to 2.5 metres, decreasing below 0.5 metres by early evening. However, be cautious as a long period easterly swell that is likely to approach southern Queensland beaches on Wednesday, with  deceptively powerful surf conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing. When conditions improve later in the week be prepared to chase pearl perch, moses perch, tusk fish and long tail tuna from North Reef. Good snapper on Sunshine Reef. Tomorrow still probably okay early with east to northeasterly about 10 knots tending north to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon. Yesterday morning, north of Hall's Reef an 80cm knobby snapper was taken. At Sunshine Reef yesterday a 23kg northern bluefin tuna on a slimy mackerel floater, also its worth trying for good snapper on Sunshine Reef and the odd big knobby on soft plastics at the Coffee’s. There have been, pearlies, tusk fish and snapper from Murphy’s. School mackerel, tuna, snapper and sweetlip off Coolum Reef. Jew and grass sweetlip from Raper Shoal. Maroochydore: A 70 cm tailor taken off Mudjimba Beach on Thursday night. A 70 cm jew caught and released overnight at Oyster Bank Rd. A Bream and a few good tailor to 60cm taken around the Motor Way Bridge Pylons and around the Cod Hole. A 68cm flathead taken off Chambers Island. Tailor, bream, whiting flathead to 60cm yesterday and trevally around Cotton Tree along the Twin Waters stretch. Flathead from Eudlo and Petrie creek mouths.

Kawana: Have a fish around Pt Cartwright for bream and tailor at night. Golden trevally and a few GT’s in the Kawana Canals. Bream, jew and a few tailor along Kawana Beach. Big bream and trevally around the boat moorings and rock walls. Sand crabs from the sand basin, throughout the river and canals systems.

Caloundra: Still getting a few tailor in the 40 to 50cm range and bream off the beaches and headlands. Plenty of bream and flathead to be had throughout the Passage. Reaching up to 20 knots offshore in the late evening with seas Below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore. Tomorrow still probably okay particularly close inshore and in the afternoon with south to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots turning east to southeasterly below 10 knots during the afternoon and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing below 1 metre during the afternoon. Worth trying for good snapper on Sunshine Reef and the odd big knobby on soft plastics at the Coffee’s. There have been, pearlies, tusk fish and snapper from Murphy’s. School mackerel, tuna, snapper and sweetlip off Coolum Reef. Jew and grass sweetlip from Raper Shoal. The Barwon Banks has been producing some quality snapper, amberjack, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, moses perch, cobia or black kingfish, gold spot wrasse and Maori cod.

Estuaries

Noosa: The Full Moon will have the fish feeding right through the weekend. A few good quality flathead around the river mouth, the canal system and with Noosa River Fishing Safaris client catching and releasing a 78cm flathead in Weyba Creek using a whole prawn bait. Still good luderick from around the river mouth car park rocks. There’s been tailor and trevally in the lower river and in Woods Bay.

Maroochydore: A 70 cm tailor taken off Mudjimba Beach on Thursday night. Bream and a few good tailor to 60cm taken around the Motor Way Bridge Pylons and around the Cod Hole area and up along Oyster Bank Road. A 68cmflathead taken yesterday off Chambers Island. Tailor, bream, whiting flathead to 60cm yesterday and trevally around Cotton Tree along the Twin Waters stretch. Flathead from Eudlo and Petrie creek mouths.

Kawana: Have a fish around Pt Cartwright for bream and tailor at night. Golden trevally and a few GT’s in the Kawana Canals. Bream, jew and a few tailor along Kawana Beach. Big bream and trevally around the boat moorings and rock walls. Sand crabs from the sand basin, throughout the river and canals systems.

Caloundra: Still getting a few tailorin the 40 to 50cm range and bream off the beaches and headlands. Plenty of bream and flathead to be had throughout the Passage. Luderick, bream and trevally off the boardwalk. Trevally and tailor in Pelican Waters Canal. Flathead from Military Jetty. Jew and bigger bream at night in the deeper hole of the northern passage.

Graeme Goodwin caught a few bream and this nice eating shovel nose shark, which when prepared by soaking the fillets in milk, as you do with calamari, is delicious.

Offshore

Good conditions with winds blowing easterly 10 to 15 knots tending northeasterly in the morning with seas below 1 metre. Similar conditions again tomorrow with a north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending northwesterly during the morning then tending southwesterly during the evening.
