2016 Fishing Reports

Local Fishing Report: Saturday 2016-12-17

Offshore

The northerlies are back but conditions are looking good early ahead of the afternoon sea breeze with winds north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending north to northwesterly early in the morning then tending north to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots in the middle of the day and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. Tomorrow  will be okay in the morning with winds increasing to rough conditions in the afternoon with north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable about 10 knots during the day then becoming south to southeasterly 20 to 30 knots during the afternoon and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2.5 metres during the evening.  A 12kg northern bluefin or longtail tuna taken at Big Hall's Reef. North Reef's had moses perch, venus tusk fish, mowong, grass sweetlip, teraglin jewfish, one snapper, sea bream, Maori cod, gold spot cod and pearl perch. Top Catch Charters has had some great catches with pelagics in good numbers of mahi mahi from Barwon Banks. The 12 Mile and Murphys have been good for  tuna, mackerel, cobia, red throat emperor, maori cod, squire, coronation trout, tusk fish, fusilier, trevally and amberjack. There's a few good spotty and spanish mackerel showing up on local reefs off Currimundi.

Estuaries

Noosa: A few good dart and whiting along Teewah Beach. Plenty of mangrove jack have been caught with some released throughout the river system at present. There's been some big flathead caught and released in the Woods Bay and between Tewantin Marina and Makepeace Island. There's been plenty of good flathead, bream, whiting and trevally at the Noosa River mouth. In Weyba Creek there's quality flathead and a few quality sand crabs and mud crabs in the mid to upper reaches.

Maroochydore: Dart, whiting and flathead from the sand bags. A few good flathead, mangrove jack and jew at night in the Cod Hole. Mangrove jack in Petrie creek and along Bli Bli reach. Flathead and bream from the mouth of Eudlo Creek. Whiting in the morning around Chambers Island and Picnic Point. Mud crab in the deeper holes of the middle and upper river.

Kawana: Good dart and whiting along the beaches. Trevally along the rock walls River mouth. Trevally, bream and gar from the boat mooring and in the Kawana canals. A few big flathead and whiting in the sand basin and trevally around Minyama Island. Trevally and flathead from Mountain Creek. Mangrove jack in the middle river and in Mountain Creek in and around the bridge pylons and snaggy banks.

Caloundra: Dart, bream and flathead along the beaches as well as trevally and queenfish on the Happy Valley side of the Bar. Whiting off Golden Beach and Bells Creek mouth, flathead along the drop offs and jew in the deeper holes in the Passage, mangrove jack around the bridge pylons and rock walls and trevally in the canals.

Offshore

The northerlies are back but conditions are looking good with winds northeasterly 10 to 15 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning. Tomorrow  will be okay early but tjhere will be a choppy seabreeze in the afternoon with winds north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending north to northwesterly during the morning then tending north to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots during the day and seas Around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon or evening. A 12kg northern bluefin or longtail tuna taken at Big Hall's Reef. North Reef's had moses perch, venus tusk fish, mowong, grass sweetlip, teraglin jewfish, one snapper, sea bream, Maori cod, gold spot cod and pearl perch. Offshore

Winds will be northerly at 10 to 15 knots turning northeasterly 15 to 20 knots in the early afternoon. Seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening. Spanish Mackerel from North and wide Sunshine Reefs. Moses perch, Maori cod, pearlies, cobia, tuna, snapper and sweetlip North reef. Coral trout and sweetlip from Sunshine Reef. Spanish mackerel and tusk fish from Coolum Reef. Sweetlip, snapper and a few spotty mackerel from the Gneerings. Spanish mackerel, spotty mackerel, sweetlip and tusk fish from Caloundra 12 mile.

Estuaries

Noosa: Good quality flathead throughout the river particularly in the lower reaches. Giant herring in the Marina and Woods bay. Trevally, tailor and whiting in Woods Bays. Mangrove jack, flathead and trevally in Noosa Sound. Threadfin salmon between the Tewantin Ferry and the mouth of Lake Cooroibah. Trevally at dawn and dusk inside the river mouth. Trevally form Munna Point. Whiting from the Frying pan.

Maroochydore: Trevally and jacks in Twin Waters canal. Trevally, bream and flathead in the southern channel. Jacks in Coolum and Petrie Creeks and through the Bli Bli Islands area. Bream, flathead and trevally around the Motorway Bridge. Whiting in the lower river over night and a few good fish around Bli Bli islands. The mud crabs are moving throughout the system.

Kawana: There’s good trevally, flathead and bream on the incoming tide along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth and around the moorings. Flathead and some good whiting upstream from McKenzies Bridge and along the La Balsa Park reach and mangrove jack at night around the bridge weekend pylons, moorings and pontoons. Mud crabs in the creeks and deep holes in the canals.

Caloundra: Big flathead in the bar and form the jetties between Golden Beach and boardwalk. Whiting from Golden Beach stretch. Bream from the boardwalk and Blue Hole. Bream, mangrove jack and trevally in Pelican waters. Jack and mud crabs in Coochin and Bells Creeks.

Winds will be northeasterly about 10 knots increasing to 10 to 15 knots in the early afternoon. Seas under 1m with 1-1.5m of swell offshore. Spanish Mackerel from North and wide Sunshine Reefs. Moses perch, Maori cod, pearlies, cobia, tuna, snapper and sweetlip North reef. Coral trout and sweetlip from Sunshine Reef. Spanish mackerel and tusk fish from Coolum Reef. Sweetlip, snapper and a few spotty mackerel from the Gneerings.

Estuaries

Offshore

Winds have finally eased back and will be easterly at 10 to 15 knots, becoming northeasterly in the late afternoon. Seas and swell are around the 1m mark. Spanish Mackerel which are starting to feed on local reefs out from Noosa, Coolum and Caloundra. Trekka 2  fished North Reef for moses perch, Maori cod, pearlies and this nice Spanish on the troll. Also worth trying for cobia, tuna snapper and sweetlip on local reefs as well a s a few coral trout off Sunshine and North reefs.

Estuaries

Noosa: Good quality flathead throughout the river particularly in the lower reaches. Golden and giant trevally the odd big tailor and whiting in Woods Bays. Mangrove jack, flathead and trevally in Noosa Sound and in Weyba Creek An 11kg threadfin salmon was taken between the Tewantin Ferry and the mouth of Lake Cooroibah. Put the crab pots in for some good buck crabs throughout but particularly in the upper reaches and creeks.

Spanish Mackerel which are starting to feed on local reefs out from Noosa, Coolum and Caloundra. Trekka 2  fished North Reef for moses perch, Maori cod, pearlies and this nice Spanish on the troll. Also worth trying for cobia, tuna snapper and sweetlip on local reefs as well a s a few coral trout off Sunshine and North reefs.

Still rough, but cooler conditions with the southerly change, giving a southeasterly 20 to 25 knots extending throughout during the early morning, decreasing to 15 to 20 knots during the evening and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 2 metres during the morning. Tomorrow’s conditions will ease back a little, with winds east to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres. When conditions do improve have a go for a few Spanish Mackerel which are starting to feed on local reefs. Trekka 2  fished North Reef for moses perch, Maori cod, pearlies and this nice Spanish on the troll. Also worth trying for cobia, tuna snapper and sweetlip on local reefs as well a s a few coral trout off Sunshine and North reefs.

Still a bit choppy early in the day then okay conditions, maybe a small window of oppertunity in the afternoon until the southerly change this evening with a northwesterly 15 to 20 knots becoming variable about 10 knots in the middle of the day. A southeasterly change about 20 knots in far southern waters late evening. and seas 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 metre around midday, then decreasing below 1 metre during the afternoon. Tomorrow, the cool change will breing relief from the heat but rough offshore with southeasterly 20 to 25 knots extending throughout during the early morning and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the morning. So with the window of opportunity this afternoon be ready to have a go for a few Spanish Mackerel which are starting to feed on local reefs. Trekka 2  fished North Reef for moses perch, Maori cod, pearlies and this nice Spanish on the troll.

Still pesky northerly’s but easing back a little, but still choppy sea breeze conditions later in the day with a northerly 10 to 15 knots tending north to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon, then north to northwest 10 to 15 knots in the late evening and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1.5 metres by early evening. Tomorrow, there’ll be a cool change coming through late in the day, but expect choppy conditions most of the day particularly out wide with northwesterly 15 to 20 knots changing south to southeasterly about 20 knots during the evening and seas 1 to 2 metres, decreasing below 1 metre during the afternoon or evening. Get ready for Spanish Mackerel which are starting to feed on local reefs. Trekka 2  fished North Reef for moses perch, Maori cod, pearlies and this nice Spanish on the troll.

Best to stay in the sheltered estuary’s today as the strong and pesky northerly’s are make conditions rough and unpleasant with northerly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots offshore south of Maroochydore early in the morning and seas 1 to 2 metres, decreasing below 1 metre later in the evening.. Easing back a bit tomorrow but still choppy with a northerly 15 to 20 knots and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the afternoon or evening.

Estuaries

Noosa: Quality flathead throughout the river particularly in the lower reaches with fish between 70 and 83cm flathead caught and released at the river mouth. Golden and giant trevally and whiting in Woods Bays. Mangrove jack, flathead and trevally in Noosa Sound and in Weyba Creek. Whiting feeding off the sand banks throughout the Noosa River. Worth putting the crab pots in the upper reaches and creeks.

Maroochydore: Schools of herring around Chambers Island. Jacks in Coolum Creek, Petrie Creek and through the Bli Bli Islands area. Bream, flathead and trevally around the Motorway Bridge. Strong Wind Warning for Today for Sunshine Coast Waters. So be ready for more of these annoying northerly’s making it rough and unpleasant with a northerly 15 to 25 knots, reaching up to 30 knots south of Maroochydore during the afternoon and evening and seas 1.5 to 2.5 metres, decreasing to 1.5 metres during the morning, then increasing to 2 to 2.5 metres during the afternoon. Golden trevally and whiting in Woods Bays. Mangrove jack, flathead and trevally in Noosa Sound and in Weyba Creek. Whiting feeding off the sand banks throughout the Noosa River. Worth putting the crab pots in the upper reaches and creeks.

Maroochydore: Schools of herring around Chambers Island. Jacks in Coolum Creek, Petrie Creek Several feisty Milkfish caught and released in Twin Waters Weir. Jacks in the creeks and Bli Bli Islands. Bream, flathead and trevally around the Motorway Bridge. A few good whiting in the lower river and up around the Bli Bli Islands. The mud crabs are moving throughout but mainly in the middle river and Maroochy Waters Canal.

Kawana: There’s trevally, flathead and bream on the incoming tide along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. Flathead upstream from McKenzies Bridge and trevally along the La Balsa Park reach and mangrove jack at night around the bridge weekend pylons, moorings and pontoons. Mud crabs in th creeks and deep holes in the canals.

Caloundra: . Flathead, a few good whiting and the odd grassy sweetlip showing up throughout the Passage particularly at the creek mouths. Whiting in Currimundi Lake and along the Golden Beach stretch. Bream and flathead off the boardwalk particularly at night. Pelican waters canals are good for bream, mangrove jack and trevally. Reports of good catches of mangrove jack and plenty of mud crabs on the prowl particularly in Coochin and Bells Creeks.

Offshore

May be okay early and then become choppy later in the morning with the sea breeze as a northerly about 10 knots increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the morning and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning, then increasing to 1.5 metres around midday. Tomorrow will be choppy to rough conditions particularly out wide and very hot weather with a northerly 15 to 25 knots and seas 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the afternoon. When you get the window of opportunity try for, coral trout, tuskfish, snapper, moses perch, cobia, pearl perch, Maori cod and a few small longtail tuna and cod on Sunshine Reef. Snapper, pearl perch, maori cod and moses perch on North Reef. Sweetlip and tuskfish at Murphys Reef and sweetlip, moses perch and small snapper at Currimundi Wide. Spanish mackerel, yellowtail king cod, sweetlip and maori cod off Coolum. School mackerel on the Outer Gneerings and Arkwright Shoal. School mackerel, tuna and sweetlip from Currimundi reef and Spanish and school mackerel on the Gneerings.
