Local Fishing Report: Thursday 2016-10-20

Offshore

More fantastic conditions today particularly in the morning, with winds variable about 10 knots becoming easterly 10 to 15 knots in the middle of the day and seas below 1 metre, increasing to around 1 metre during the afternoon. Tomorrow will be good as well with an east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots and seas around 1 metre.  Wild Thing 2 fished Double Island for snapper, grassies, trag jew, mulloway and scarlet sea perch. Chardon's for pearl perch, tuskies, moses, trag, lippers, Maoris, goldspot cod and an estimated 10kg scarlet sea perch. There have been snapper and grassy sweetlip at Murphys and Currimundi Reefs and yellowtail king at the Inner Gneerings and Mooloolaba Blinker. Snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and cobia from the Hards. On Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, squire, grass sweetlip and pearl perch. Mackerel. Coral trout, sweetlip and mac tuna from Coolum Reef.

Estuaries

Noosa: Noosa River Fishing Safari’s crew caught and released an 80cm flathead using a prawn bait. There a few good whiting feeding in the lower river as well as trevally on top of the tide at the Noosa River mouth. Bream in the deep holes around the Frying Pan and Tewantin Marina, Flathead to 60 cm, moses perch and Jacks in Weyba Creek. Jack and mud crabs between Tewantin and Lake Cooroibah.

Maroochydore: Heaps of herring baitfish still in the lower river. Flathead to 68cm in Petrie and Eudlo Creeks, giant and golden trevally at the Cod Hole area and Chambers Island. Jack in the upper reaches and a few whiting from Bli Bli, the mouth of Eudlo Creek and the lower river. Mud crabs in the upper reaches.

Kawana: Dart and whiting along Kawana Beach, trevally at dawn and dusk along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River. Jack, flathead and Cod in Parrearra Channel and around the twin bridge. Bream, Gar and trevally around the boat moorings. Bream and flathead in the Basin and mud crabs in the deep holes in the canals

Caloundra: Flathead in the Blue Hole and at the entrance to Coochin Creek. Whiting opposite Bells Creek and along Golden Beach. Jew, mangrove jack showing up in the creeks and bigger bream at night in the deeper holes of the northern passage. Mud crabs in Coochin Creek and up the canals.

38cm Trevally Chambers Island

A 53 cm flathead and this 38cm trevally was taken off the Chambers Is Bridge late afternoon by Evie Hagens.

Offshore

Fantastic conditions today particularly in the morning, with variable winds about 10 knots becoming east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the early afternoon with seas  below 1 metre. Tomorrow will be good as well with a northeasterly about 10 knots tending easterly 10 to 15 knots during the morning and seas around 1 metre. Double Island is fishing well for snapper, pearlies, cobia, moses perch, tuskies, Maori cod and gold spot cod. Chardon's for pearl perch, tuskies, moses, trag, lippers, Maoris, goldspot cod and an estimated 10kg scarlet sea perch. There have been snapper and grassy sweetlip at Murphys and Currimundi Reefs and yellowtail king at the Inner Gneerings and Mooloolaba Blinker. Snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and cobia from the Hards. On Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, squire, grass sweetlip and pearl perch. Mackerel. Coral trout, sweetlip and mac tuna from Coolum Reef.

Estuaries

Much better conditions today than yesterday with northwest to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots, reaching up to 20 knots offshore early in the morning. Winds tending southeast to southwesterly before dawn then becoming east to northeasterly about 10 knots in the early afternoon and seas1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing below 1 metre during the morning. Great conditions for tomorrow with variable about 10 knots becoming northeast to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the day then tending northeasterly during the afternoon. Heath Norman Seventeen Seventy Sheephead Parrotfish

Heath Norman fished at Seventeen Seventy for a Steephead Parrotfish (drab form may include both males and females, but the bright form are always males and sex change is common, minimum size 25 cm) as well as a nice coral trout.

Offshore

Conditions will be choppy to rough again with a Strong Wind Warning for Sunshine Coast Waters today particularly in the afternoon with winds northerly 15 to 25 knots, reaching up to 30 knots in the evening with seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2.5 metres around midday. Conditions again easing back tomorrow with northwest to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots tending northeast to southeasterly during the morning then tending northerly during the evening. Chardon's for pearl perch, tuskies, moses, trag, lippers, Maoris, goldspot cod and an estimated 10kg scarlet sea perch. There have been snapper and grassy sweetlip at Murphys and Currimundi Reefs and yellowtail king at the Inner Gneerings and Mooloolaba Blinker. Winds will be southeasterly 15 to 20 knots turning easterly 10 to 15 knots in the late afternoon with seas 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday  Conditions easing back tomorrow with easterly 10 to 15 knots turning northeasterly during the day and seas below 1 metre. Trekka 2 fished Chardon's on Thursday for pearl perch, tuskies, moses, trag, lippers, Maoris, goldspot cod and an estimated 10kg scarlet sea perch, So be ready to go as conditions improve later today. Conditions will be pretty rough with a Strong Wind Warning for Sunshine Coast Waters. Winds will be southeasterly 25 to 30 knots decreasing to 20 to 25 knots in the late afternoon with seas  2 to 3 metres. Conditions easing back tomorrow with Southeasterly 15 to 20 knots turning easterly 10 to 15 knots in the evening. Looks like it will be best to fish in sheltered waters!

Offshore

Looking like reasonable conditions early, but increasing to become pretty rough through the late morning and afternoon with a Strong Wind Warning for Sunshine Coast Waters. Winds will start off variable about 10 knots, tending southwest to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots in the morning ahead of a south to southeasterly change 20 to 30 knots extending from the south in the afternoon. Seas will be below 1 metre, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the afternoon, then increasing to 2.5 to 3 metres by early evening. Similar conditions for most of tomorrow with southeasterly 20 to 30 knots decreasing to 10 to 15 knots during the evening. Looks like the next few days you will have to fish in sheltered waters!

Estuaries

Noosa: There a a few good whiting beginning to feed in the lower river with a few elbow slappers to 43cm. Justin Stegert caught a 2kg grunter bream or javelin fish in the Woods Bay, while on a Noosa River Fishing Safari crew caught and released a 75cm flathead in the same area. Flathead, moses perch and Jacks in Weyba Creek. Mangrove jack and mud crabs along the Tewantin stretch.

Maroochydore: Heaps of herring baitfish around the Cod Hole and Yinni Street. Good flathead in Petrie and Eudlo Creeks and golden trevally to 59cm from around Chambers Island. A few big bream overnight off Chambers Island. Mangrove jack in the creeks and upper reaches of the river. Few whiting from Bli Bli, the mouth of Eudlo Creek and the lower river. Looking like choppy conditions continuing particularly in the morning with southeasterly 15 to 20 knots turning east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon with seas1.5 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday. There has however been good catches recently with cobia taken at Jew Shoal and North Reef’s had snapper, moses perch, teraglin jewfish, hussar and mulloway. There have been snapper and grassy sweetlip at Murphys and Currimundi Reefs and yellowtail king at the Inner Gneerings and Mooloolaba Blinker. Snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and cobia from the Hards. On Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, squire, grass sweetlip and pearl perch. Mackerel. Coral trout, sweetlip and mac tuna from Coolum Reef.

Estuaries

Noosa: Dart, whiting and bream along Teewah and the southern Beaches. The Munna Flats and point has had a few elbow slapper whiting to 43cm with several in the 39 to 40cm range. There have been several good flathead and golden trevally caught throughout the river system. Flathead, moses perch and Jacks in Weyba Creek. Mangrove jack and mud crabs along the Tewantin stretch.

Maroochydore: Flathead around 45cm in Petrie Creek and golden trevally to 59 from around Chambers Island. Shovel nose sharks to 1.29cm have been feeding in the system. A few big bream overnight off Chambers Island. Mangrove jack in the creeks and upper reaches of the river. Whiting from Bli Bli, the mouth of Eudlo Creek and the lower river. Mud crabs in the deeper holes of the middle river.

The crews on Top Catch Charters have been doing okay out at Murphy’s recently for snapper to 76 cm.

Offshore

Looking like a mixed bag of conditions which could be choppy to rough particularly out wide with north to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots offshore south of Maroochydore early in the morning. Winds shifting southeasterly in the middle of the day with seas 1 to 2 metres. Might be better to stay in sheltered waters today and tomorrow!  Winds hopefully easing back late on Wednesday.There has however been good catches recently with a 9kg and 14kg cobia taken at Jew Shoal and North Reef’s had snapper, moses perch, teraglin jewfish, hussar and mulloway. Also at D.I for moses perch, snapper, venus tusk fish, grass sweetlip, brown hussar, pearl perch and slate bream. There have been snapper and grassy sweetlip at Murphys and Currimundi Reefs and yellowtail king at the Inner Gneerings and Mooloolaba Blinker. Conditions good early today with a north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots, increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. So it could be okay close in and for larger boats in the afternoon but with choppy conditions out wide. Tomorrow could be fairly choppy to rough with West to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots shifting southeasterly 15 to 25 knots during the morning. Winds tending easterly 15 to 20 knots during the evening and seas 1.5 to 2.5 metres, decreasing below 1.5 metres during the evening.  A 9kg and 14kg cobia taken at Jew Shoal  The crews on Wild Thing 2 fished North Reef on Thursday for squire, moses perch, teraglin jewfish, hussar and mulloway. Quality mangrove jack in the canals and around the Northern bank near Twin Waters boat ramp. Flathead, bream and trevally in Petrie Creek. Whiting from Bli Bli, the mouth of Eudlo Creek and the lower river. Mud crabs in the deeper holes of the middle river.

Robert Whiting has been catching a few whiting, bream and trevally in the middle reaches of the Maroochy River.

Local Fishing Report: Saturday 2016-10-08

Offshore

Conditions good early today with a north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots, increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. So it could be okay close in and for larger boats in the afternoon but with choppy conditions out wide. Tomorrow could be fairly choppy to rough with West to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots shifting southeasterly 15 to 25 knots during the morning. Winds tending easterly 15 to 20 knots during the evening and seas 1.5 to 2.5 metres, decreasing below 1.5 metres during the evening.  A 9kg and 14kg cobia taken at Jew Shoal  The crews on Wild Thing 2 fished North Reef on Thursday for squire, moses perch, teraglin jewfish, hussar and mulloway. Also at D.I for moses perch, snapper, venus tusk fish, grass sweetlip, brown hussar, pearl perch and slate bream. There have been snapper and grassy sweetlip at Murphys and Currimundi Reefs and yellowtail king at the Inner Gneerings and Mooloolaba Blinker. Snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and cobia from the Hards. On Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, squire, grass sweetlip and pearl perch. Mackerel. Coral trout, sweetlip and mac tuna from Coolum Reef.

Estuaries

Noosa: Dart, whiting and bream along Teewah Beach. The Munna Flats has had a few elbow slapper whiting to 43cm with several in the 40cm range. The crews on Noosa River Fishing Safari caught and released an 85cm flathead in the lower estuary on Tuesday and there have been several good flathead caught throughout the river. Flathead and golden trevally in the lower river. Flathead, moses perch and Jacks in Weyba Creek. Mangrove jack and mud crabs along the Tewantin stretch.

Maroochydore: A school of hairtail feeding in the middle reaches. A few good whiting and flathead in Maroochy Waters Canal and in the Cod Hole. A few big bream overnight off Chambers Island. Quality mangrove jack in the canals and around the Northern bank near Twin Waters boat ramp. Flathead, bream and trevally in Petrie Creek. Whiting from Bli Bli, the mouth of Eudlo Creek and the lower river. Mud crabs in the deeper holes of the middle river.

Kawana: Dart and whiting along the Warana stretch. Jacks and Cod in Parrearra Channel and under the twin bridge. Bream, Gar and trevally around the boat moorings and rock walls. Flathead and whiting in the Basin.

Check out Robert Whiting with 2 big Hairtail taken in the Cod Hole yesterday. He said that they kept cutting his live silver biddy bait off like a meat cleaver. Hairtail are an excellent eating fish.

Offshore

Near perfect conditions today particularly in the morning and early afternoon, with winds variable about 10 knots becoming northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the late afternoon then tending northerly in the late evening. Seas  below 1 metre, increasing to around 1 metre during the afternoon. Conditions reasonable tomorrow close in and for larger boats but with a choppy northerly with a north to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots and around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon or evening.The crews on Wild Thing 2 fished D.I. on Tuesday for moses perch, snapper, venus tusk fish, grass sweetlip, brown hussar, pearl perch and slate bream.
