Local Fishing Report: Wednesday 2017-08-02

Offshore

Winds will be southeasterly at 10 to 15 knots, with seas below 1m.  Sunshine Reef has good tuskies, sweetlip, moses perch, trevally, squire and catch’s of school mackerel. Double island Point has had red emperor, long tail tuna, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, hussar, jobfish, pearl perch, spangled emperor and heaps of good tuskies. Snapper, hussar and tusk fish from the Hards. Still lots of cobia around up to 27kg fish north of Hall's Reef and around the Blinker off Mooloolaba. Snapper to 7kg, red throat emperor and pearl perch from the banks. North Reefs had solid  snapper, cobia and Moses perch, mackerel, maori cod, coral bream, pearl perch and small mouth nannygai. Snapper, sweetlip and moses perch from the Blinker. Pearl perch venus tusk fish, moses perch from Wide Caloundra. Snapper from the Caloundra 5 mile. School mackerel, cod and sweetlip from Currimundi reef. Cod, sweetlip, tusk fish and pearl perch from Coolum Reef.

Estuaries and Beaches

Noosa: Jacks, trevally, flathead and bream in Woods Bays. Big tailor on the making tide in the lower river. Good trevally feeding throughout the river and a few diamond trevally in the lower river. Flathead form the river mouth and along Tewantin stretch. There are plenty of bream throughout the lower river. Grunter bream between the lakes. Try for luderick at the rocks at the river mouth.

Maroochydore: Jew feeding around the Coolum and Yaroomba headlands and gutters. Whiting, dart and Tarwhine along Marcoola Beach and Town of Seaside beaches. Bream and small flathead from the river mouth. Bream, flathead and golden trevally from Twin Waters. Flathead in the creeks and Bli Bli Islands. Grunter bream and whiting from the creek mouths. Few tailor, golden trevally and queenfish between between the Cod Hole and Chambers Island. Sand crabs in the lower river.

Mooloolaba: Tailor, flathead, bream and tarwhine in the gutter south of Point Cartwright. Bream and tailor from the rock walls and moorings. Flathead in the La Balsa Sand basin. Bream, tailor and Trevally around the boat moorings. Golden and Giant Trevally around Minyama Island. Flathead and Bream from McKenzies Bridge. Sand crabs between Minyama Island and the mouth.

Caloundra: Bream and tarwhine from Currimundi Beach. Whiting and bream along Dicky Beach. Tailor and bream from the Northern tip of Bribie. Giant and golden trevally on lure in Pelican waters Canal. Local Fishing Report: Tuesday 2017-08-01

Offshore

Good conditions early morning as winds will be northwesterly 10 to 15 knots shifting southeasterly in the middle of the day. Winds reaching up to 20 knots offshore south of Maroochydore and seas will be 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore south of Maroochydore during the afternoon. Tomorrow will be better conditions with a southeasterly 10 to 15 knots turning east to northeasterly below 10 knots during the afternoon with seas around 1 metre. Sunshine Reef has good tuskies, sweetlip, moses perch, trevally, squire and catch’s of school mackerel. Noosa: Try for jew and tailor along the beaches and headlands in the national park. Try for bream, whiting and tailor in the frying pan. Good trevally feeding throughout the river and a few diamond trevally in the lower river. Plenty of good quality flathead in the lower system with several being caught and released. There are plenty of bream throughout the lower river. Grunter bream between the lakes. Try for luderick at the rocks at the river mouth.

Winds will be north to northwesterly at 10 to 15 knots tending north to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon before turning northwesterly in the late evening. Local Fishing Report: Friday 2017-07-28

Offshore

Beautiful winter conditions right through the weekend so it would be worth having a day off today and going fishing particularly in the morning with winds variable below 10 knots becoming northerly 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon. Winds tending north to northwesterly in the evening and reaching up to 20 knots offshore and seas below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening. Tomorrow will have good conditions close inshore but a bit choppy out wide in the morning with winds west to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots shifting east to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning. The crews on Trekka 2 charter to Sunshine Reef caught a good feed of tuskies, sweetlip, moses perch, trevally, squire and had good fun on the jigs catching school mackerel. There are catches of some quality red emperor, long tail tuna, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, hussar, jobfish, pearl perch, spangled emperor and heaps of good tuskies from Double island Point. There’s been Snapper, hussar and tusk fish from the Hards. Still lots of cobia around, Lachlan Riley picked up this 27kg fish north of Hall's Reef and my mate Ben Forgan landed a monster Cobia off Mooloolaba on Sunday. Snapper to 7kg, red throat emperor and pearl perch from the banks. North Reefs had solid snapper, cobia and Moses perch, mackerel, maori cod, coral bream, pearl perch and small mouth nannygai. Cobia and Spanish mackerel from Halls Reef. Cobia, pearl perch, snapper and pigfish from wide Caloundra. School mackerel, cobia and sweetlip, tusk fish and cod from Coolum Reef.

Out from Hervey Bay the southern gutters have had coral trout, cobia, tusk fish, sweetlip and cod. Trevally, Spanish mackerel and snapper in Platypus bay. Trevally and school mackerel around Wathumba and Rooneys Pt. Trevally and school mackerel from Burrum 8 mile. Inshore reefs have had snappe, blackall,cod and a few coral trout and school mackerel. The reefs off Rainbow Beach and DIP have had good snapper, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, sweetlip, pearl perch, tuskfish and cobia, long tail tuna and cod about 20nm north and 15nm east of Wide Bay Bar.

Estuaries and Beaches

Fraser Island: Bream in the deep holes. Whiting and dart in the low tide gutters. A few tailor, jew and odd Spanish mackerel feeding in the guttersl. Best to travel on low tide.

Hervey Bay: Try for barramundi and mangrove jacks in the Burrum River. Squid around the rock ledges and weed beds. Winter Whiting off Dundowran and Toogum. Jew, bream, grunter, mackerel, flathead and a few tailor feeding throughout the Sandy Straits.

Rainbow Beach: Tailor, bream, flathead and dart along the beaches and Inskip Point. A few flathead and bream from Carlow Point. Golden trevally and barramundi in Kauri Creek.

Local Dams and Rivers: In Borumba Dam the cooler weather has the bass schooling in the deeper holes, so best to use your sounder to locate the fish and use Ice Jigs Sooty Grunter, good bass and golden perch on trolled hard bodied lures ,live shrimp and small metal slugs in the Mary River and its tributaries.

There are catches of some quality red emperor, long tail tuna, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, hussar, jobfish, pearl perch, spangled emperor and heaps of good tuskies from Double island Point. Luderick just starting up at the rocks at the river mouth.

Maroochydore: Whiting, Dart and Tarwhine along Marcoola Beach. Plenty of bream and flathead from the river mouth and in the gutters along North Shore. Bream with the odd one to 40 cm, trevally, tailor and flathead in the Cod Hole. Flathead in the mouth of Eudlo Creek and around Goat and Channel Island. Whiting, trevally, bream and flathead in the southern channel. Few tailor, golden trevally and queenfish between between the Cod Hole and Chambers Island.

Mooloolaba: Tailor, flathead, bream and tarwhine in the gutter south of point Cartwright. Bream and tailor from the rock walls and moorings. Gar fish, whiting and flathead in the La Balsa Sand basin. Bream, tailor and Trevally around the boat moorings. Golden and Giant Trevally around Minyama Island. Flathead and Bream from McKenzies Bridge.

Caloundra: Bream, small snapper and tailor off the headlands. Tailor and bream from the Northern tip of Bribie. Bream, flathead and trevally from the boardwalk and also off Military Jetty and throughout the top end of the passage. Bream and flathead along golden beach. Bream, Trevally and Tailor in Pelican Waters.

Offshore

Improving conditions today, with southwesterly 15 to 20 knots turning south to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the late morning and afternoon with seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning. Tomorrow southerly’s could make conditions choppy particularly out wide, but Sunday looking excellent for offshore fishing with winds dropping right off, so be organised and rearing to go! Out from Hervey Bay the southern gutters have had coral trout, tusk fish, sweetlip and cod. Trevally, Spanish mackerel and snapper in Platypus bay. Trevally and school mackerel from Burrum 8 mile. The reefs off Rainbow Beach and DIP have had good snapper, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, sweetlip, pearl perch, tuskfish and cobia, long tail tuna and cod about 20nm north and 15nm east of Wide Bay Bar. Fraser Island: Bream in the deep holes. Whiting and dart in the low tide gutters. A few tailor and odd Spanish mackerel. Best to travel on low tide.
Hervey Bay: Barramundi and mangrove jacks in the Burrum River. Squid around the rock ledges and weed beds. Winter Whiting off Dundowran and Toogum. Bream, grunter, mackerel, flathead and a few tailor feeding throughout the Sandy Straits.
Rainbow Beach: Tailor, bream, flathead and dart along the beaches and Inskip Point. A few flathead and bream from Carlow Point. Golden trevally and barramundi in Kauri Creek.

Local Dams and Rivers: In Borumba Dam the cooler weather has the bass schooling in the deeper holes, so best to use your sounder to locate the fish and use Ice Jigs Sooty Grunter good bass and golden perch on trolled hard bodied lures ,live shrimp and small metal slugs in the Mary River and its tributaries.

Winds will be southwesterly at 15 to 25 knots, reaching up to 30 offshore before dawn. Winds decreasing to 10 to 15 knots in the late morning and then becoming variable about 10 knots in the early afternoon. Winds then tending west to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots in the evening and reaching up to 20 knots at times offshore. Seas will be 1 to 1.5 metres, reaching up to 3 metres offshore in the early morning.  There’s been Snapper, hussar and tusk fish from the Hards. North Reefs had venus tusk, snapper, sweetlip and good long tail tuna. Cobia, trout, Spanish mackerel, long tail tuna and sweetlip from Sunshine Reef. Tuna and mackerel in Laguna Bay. Cobia, pearl perch, snapper and pigfish from wide Caloundra.

Rough conditions, with a Strong Wind Warning for today in Sunshine Coast Waters with northwesterly 15 to 25 knots turning west to southwesterly during the morning and reaching up to 30 knots offshore with seas 2 to 3 metres. Not much better early tomorrow with choppy to rough conditions tomorrow particularly out wide with winds and seas 1.5 to 2.5 metres. There’s been Snapper, hussar and tusk fish from the Hards. This is Peter Thomas’s son Eli, with a nice dart taken last week at Waddy Pt by the look of it. Peter is the Funeral Manager at www.gregsonweight.com.au/our-locations/nambour/ Peters father, Digger Thomas a prominent Funeral Director in Nambour for decades and was one of the early pioneers in the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s of accessing the Fraser Island and Cooloola.
He is a very good friend of our family and they have a family home at Happy Valley. Could you please use then Eli (Named after Eli Creek on Fraser Island)
