Local Fishing Report: Friday 2017-01-13

Offshore

Yesterday’s Full Moon will have the fish feeding for the next few days. Looks like hot but reasonable conditions with early light variable wind turning northwesterly 15-20 knots early afternoon and then easing to be light in the late afternoon with seas around 1 metre. The Spanish mackerel feeding off Double Island Point and on Sunshine Reef. On North Reef yesterday, Trekka 2 in the morning ended up with moses perch, lippers, tuskies, and pearl perch and in the afternoon they took pearlies, moses, tuskies, Maori cod, lippers and gold spot cod. Spotty mackerel and northern bluefin or longtail tuna in Laguna Bay and Big Hall's reef. Pearl perch, tuskfish, maori cod and a10kg spanish mackerel on Sunshine Reef. Mahi Mahi and mackerel on the Caloundra 12 mile reef. Tuskfish, snapper, sweetlip and coral trout at dusk on Murphys Reef and the Inner Gneerings and school mackerel around the NW fairway buoy. Spanish mackerel off Point Cartwright, on the Gneering Shoals and Coolum Reef, snapper and mahi mahi at the Hards.

Estuaries

Noosa: There’s good flathead throughout the river system but particularly around the river mouth and lower river, as well as trevally in the lower estuary around the top of the tide. A few nice grunter bream and the odd big whiting to 40cm along the Tewantin reach and in Lake Cooroibah. The heat wave has the mangrove jack feeding throughout the river system. Mud crabs in the mid to upper reaches.

Maroochydore: A few herring bait fish in the lower river. Whiting over night some good flathead and a few golden trevally in the lower river and Cod Hole. Few good jack in upper reaches and up the creeks. Flathead and jacks in Coolum Creek. Bream, a few grunter, and flathead in Petrie Creek. Whiting from Bli Bli flats and around the Bli Bli Islands. Mud crabs are being caught throughout the river at present.

Kawana: Dart and whiting in the gutters, south of Pt Cartwright. Golden trevally along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth, flathead and golden trevally along the La Balsa Park. A few big flathead and whiting in the sand basin and trevally around Minyama Island. Mangrove jack in Mountain Creek and in the upper river. Giant herring and trevally in the Mountain Creek lakes. Plenty of good mud crabs in the middle river.

Caloundra: A few dart along the beaches as well as trevally and flathead close to the Bar. Bream and trevally off the boardwalk. Whiting off Golden Beach and Bells Creek mouth. Flathead with several in the 50 to 60 cm range along the drop offs and jew in the deeper holes in the Passage. Mangrove jack in Pelican Waters canals bridge pylons and pontoons. Mangrove jack and flathead in Coochin Creek.

Tomorrow will be similar good conditions with winds north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots decreasing to about 10 knots early in the morning then tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the middle of the day, with seas below 1 metre. The Spanish mackerel feeding off Double Island Point and on Sunshine Reef. Tomorrow easing a little to be choppy with easterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. There have been several big Spanish mackerel taken of Double Island Point. There’s been amberjack, pearl perch and cod on North Reef and spotty mackerel and northern bluefin or longtail tuna in Laguna Bay and Big Hall's reef. Noosa: There’s good flathead throughout the system with several big fish released recently. Golden trevally have been caught, in the lower estuary around the top of the tide. A few big flathead was caught and released and the odd tailor in Woods Bay. A few nice grunter bream along the Tewantin reach and in Lake Cooroibah. Plenty of mangrove jack feeding throughout the river system. Mud crabs in the mid to upper reaches.

Maroochydore: Quality whiting over night and golden trevally in the lower river. Few good jack in upper reaches and around substantial structures in the lower river. Flathead throughout the river and bream from the mouth of Eudlo Creek. Some good mud crab but plenty of undersize and female crabs to be returned throughout the river system.

Kawana: Dart and whiting in the gutters, south of Pt Cartwright. Golden trevally along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth, flathead and golden trevally along the La Balsa Park. Good quality whiting in the Basin. A few big flathead and whiting in the sand basin and trevally around Minyama Island. Trevally and flathead and mangrove jack in the middle river and in Mountain Creek in and around the bridge pylons and snaggy banks.

Caloundra: A few dart along the beaches as well as trevally and flathead on the Happy Valley side of the Bar. Whiting off Golden Beach and Bells Creek mouth, flathead along the drop offs and jew in the deeper holes in the Passage. Mangrove jack around the bridge pylons and rock walls.

Offshore

Conditions changing this morning with winds east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots turning east to southeasterly during the morning. Winds reaching up to 20 knots inshore in the evening and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening. Tomorrow will have choppy easterly ‘s 15 to 20 knots and seas round 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore north of Maroochydore. There’s been amberjack, pearl perch and cod on North Reef and spotty mackerel and northern bluefin or longtail tuna in Laguna Bay and Big Hall's reef.  Pearl perch, tuskfish, maori cod and a10kg spanish mackerel on Sunshine Reef. Spanish and spotty mackerel at Jew Shoal, while there’s pearl perch, estuary cod and large mouth nannygai on Massouds Reef and snapper, pearl perch, moses perch and spanish mackerel on North Reef. Tuskfish, snapper, sweetlip and coral trout at dusk on Murphys Reef and the Inner Gneerings and school mackerel around the NW fairway buoy. Spanish mackerel off Point Cartwright, on the Gneering Shoals and Coolum Reef, snapper and mahi mahi at the Hards. Tuskfish on the Barwon Banks, mahi mahi on the light tackle marlin grounds and small black marlin east of the Barwon Banks.

Offshore

Reasonable conditions early today with winds northerly 10 to 15 knots turning into a northeasterly sea breeze during the afternoon and evening and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning, then increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon.
