Local Fishing Report: Monday 2017-10-16

Offshore

Strong Wind Warning for today in Sunshine Coast Waters, winds east to southeasterly 25 to 30 knots and seas 2.5 to 3 metres. Tomorrow and possibly into early Wednesday will have little change with rough conditions and winds easterly 20 to 30 knots and seas 1.5 to 2.5 metres. So best to stay in sheltered waters for a few days. Hopefully later in the week and certainly looking at the forecast and the New Moon Phase on Friday having the fish in the bite, next weekend should be worthwhile for offshore fishing.

Estuaries and Beaches

Noosa: A few good whiting throughout the lower river. Sand crabs along the Noosaville reach and in Weyba Creek. Golden trevally and big flathead to be released in the 75 to 80cm range in the Woods Bays, the river mouth and generally throughout the river system. Golden trevally, grunter, flathead along Tewantin Stretch. Whiting, diamond trevally and grunter in Lake Cooroibah. After the good rains put the crab pots in throughout the river.

Maroochydore: Schools of herring back in the rivers. Plenty of flathead throughout the river system, with some big dusky flathead caught and released up to 86cm. With the good rains there are good mud crabs throughout the river. Whiting and flathead between Chambers and Channel Island. Flathead from Bli Bli flats and the creek mouths. Trevally to 60cm in Maroochy Waters Canal. Sand crabs in the lower river. Mangrove jacks, trevally, cod and jew from the rock bars in the middle and upper river.

Mooloolaba: There have been dart and tarwhine from Kawana Beach. Cod, bream and trevally in Parrearra Channel. Trevally and bream off the rock walls. Mangrove jack from the rock bars in the upper river. Trevally and cod around Minyama Island. Whiting and flathead from the sand basin. Flathead around McKenzie’s Bridge.

Caloundra: Whiting, bream, mangrove jack and trevally in Currimundi Creek and Lake. Getting a few good quality flathead inside the bar, off the Northern tip of Bribie and from the creek mouths. Whiting from Golden Beach and from the banks south of Bells Creek. Trevally, mud crabs, and a few sandies grunter and cod in Pelican Waters Canal.

Matthew Planck fished the Cod hole on Friday, dropping 2 good flathead at the side of the boat, keeping these nice eating size fish and also being broken off after a hard run into the pylons.

Offshore

Yes, a great day out on the water today, with winds east to northeasterly about 10 knots tending east to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the morning, with seas below 1 metre, increasing to around 1 metre by early evening. Tomorrow will become choppy to rough with winds east to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots at times in the afternoon and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1 to 2 metres during the morning. Spotty and school mackerel from Caloundra 12 mile and NW fairway beacon. Snapper, Maori cod and tusk fish from Murphy’s Reef. Red emperor, tusk fish, spotty mackerel and snapper from Caloundra 12 mile. Snapper, sweetlip, big cobia and moses perch from the Blinker. Trekka 2 crew fished D.I.P the fish were biting from the first to last drop and we caught snapper, jewfish, moses perch, venus tusk fish, frypan snapper, hussar, gold spot cod, areolate cod and pearl perch. Chardons Reef snapper, cobia, moses perch, tusk fish. Gold spot cod, maori cod and pearl perch. The Banks has had good snapper, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, pearl perch, venus tusk fish. The Hards has had heaps of big hussar, big tuskies, Maori cod, moses perch, coral bream, big gold spot wrasse, spangled emperor and a cracking 81cm red emperor. Coral trout, grass sweetlip, cobia, tuna, tusk fish and snapper from Sunshine Reef. A few good Cobia from Halls reef. Snapper, moses perch, Maori cod, venus tusk fish, scarlet sea perch, gold spot cod, jew, tailor and gold band snapper from Double Island Point.

Alex Beggs 84cm Barra Released

Fishing on his kayak, Alex Beggs caught and released an 84cm Barra in a Sunshine Coast canal on Wednesday this week. Please remember, Barramundi East Coast Closed Season is 1st of November to 1st February. (Note: It is also prohibited to deliberately target barramundi for catch and release during these closed seasons, as the stress of capture may prevent a fish from spawning.)

Red emperor, tusk fish, spotty mackerel and snapper from Caloundra 12 mile. Snapper, sweetlip, big cobia and moses perch from the Blinker. Chardons Reef snapper, cobia, moses perch, tusk fish. Gold spot cod, maori cod and pearl perch. The Banks has had good snapper, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, pearl perch, venus tusk fish. Also the crews on Baitrunner from, Rainbow Beach Reef Fishing Charters have taken good  snapper, pearl perch, red throat emperor, sweetlip, tusk fish, hussar, moses perch and mulloway 20nm east of Wide Bay Bar recently. Snapper, moses perch, Maori cod, venus tusk fish, scarlet sea perch, gold spot cod, jew, tailor and gold band snapper from Double Island Point.

Conditions could be a bit choppy through today particularly in the south  with winds forecast to be northerly 10 to 15 knots, reaching 15 to 20 knots offshore south of Maroochydore in the morning with seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre around midday Looks like good conditions tomorrow with just a bit of northerly chop, with winds northwesterly 10 to 15 knots becoming north to northeasterly about 10 knots during the afternoon with seas below 1 metre. Saturday is looking good with lighter southerly winds most of the day, then turning north-easterly  through in to Sunday with conditions becoming choppy to rough into the afternoon and evening.  Snapper, Maori cod and tusk fish from Murphy’s Reef. Snapper, sweetlip, big cobia and moses perch from the Blinker. There have been Moses perch, flathead, gold spot cod and snapper from the Gneerings. Chardons Reef yesterday had snapper, cobia, moses perch, quality venus tusk fish and pearl perch. The Banks has had good snapper, mulloway, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, hussar, venus tusk fish and coral bream. The Hards has had heaps of big hussar, big tuskies, Maori cod, moses perch, coral bream, big gold spot wrasse, spangled emperor and a cracking 81cm red emperor. Conditions will be okay early morning with winds northwesterly 10 to 15 knots shifting southeasterly from the late morning. Winds reaching up to 20 knots offshore south of Maroochydore during the afternoon and evening and seas 1 to 1.5 metres. Tomorrow is looking pretty good with lighter winds southeasterly 10 to 15 knots shifting north to northeasterly below 10 knots during the evening, with seas around 1 metre. Snapper, Maori cod and tusk fish from Murphy’s Reef. Snapper, sweetlip, big cobia and moses perch from the Blinker.  There have been Moses perch, flathead, gold spot cod and snapper from the Gneerings. Shovelnose North Shore Released

Marc Wood caught and released this big shovelnose shark from North Shore beach, Mudjimba on Saturday morning using a whole pilchard and would have weighed an estimated 15kgs.

Offshore

Conditions could be okay between the change and in the evening but most likely to be a uncomfortable and choppy for a good part of the day for small boats with winds north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots at first, reaching up to 20 knots offshore before dawn. A south to southeasterly change 15 to 20 knots extending from the south from the early morning. Winds tending east to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the evening and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning. Excellent conditions tomorrow as winds ease back to east to southeasterly about 10 knots becoming northeasterly during the evening with seas around 1 metre. So be ready to go. It will be worth hunting for a few snapper, Maori cod and tusk fish from Murphy’s Reef. Snapper, sweetlip, big cobia and moses perch from the Blinker.  There have been Moses perch, flathead, gold spot cod and snapper from the gneerings. Trekka 2, crew fished The Banks on Thursday where they caught snapper, jewfish, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, hussar, venus tusk fish and coral bream." Snapper, jewfish, quality spangled emperor, hussar and venus tusk fish from the Barwon Banks. Wild Thing 2, crew fished The Hards on Thursday where they caught heaps of big hussar, big tuskies, Maori cod, moses perch, coral bream, big gold spot wrasse, spangled emperor and a cracking 81cm red emperor. Snapper, pig fish, parrot and pearl perch from the Hards. Coral trout, grass sweetlip and snapper from Sunshien Reef. North Reef caught pearl perch, moses perch, coral bream, venus tusk fish, snapper, Maori cod and plenty of good cobia. Crews on Baitrunner from, Rainbow Beach Reef Fishing Charters have taken good  snapper, pearl perch, red throat emperor, sweetlip, tusk fish, hussar, moses perch and mulloway 20nm east of Wide Bay Bar recently. Maroochydore: Schools of herring back in the rivers. Plenty of flathead throughout the river wit som caught and released up to 82cm. Good mud crab caught yesterday, near Maroochy waters Canal entrance Whiting and flathead on the between Chambers and Channel Island. Flathead from Bli Bli flats and the creek mouths. Trevally to 60cm in Maroochy Waters Canal. Sand crabs in the lower river. Mangrove jacks, trevally, cod and jew from the rock bars in the middle and upper river.

Mooloolaba: Try for dart and tarwhine from Kawana Beach. Cod, bream and trevally in Parrearra Channel. Trevally and bream off the rock walls. Mangrove jack from the rock bars in the upper river. Trevally and cod around Minyama Island. Whiting and flathead from the sand basin. Flathead around McKenzie’s Bridge.

Caloundra: Good conditions for next couple of days so go for grass sweetlip and trevally from Moffat Head. Whiting and bream in Currimundi Lake. Jacks and trevally in Currimundi Creek. Getting a few good quality flathead inside the bar, off the Northern tip of Bribie and from the creek mouths. Whiting from Golden Beach and from the banks south of Bells Creek. Trevally, mudcrabs, a few grunter and cod in Pelican Waters Canal.

Offshore

Good conditions early , then becoming choppy in the afternoon with north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots, tending northeast to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon with seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. Then tomorrow looking okay with some choppy conditions through the day with Northwesterly 10 to 15 knots shifting southeasterly 15 to 20 knots during the morning then tending easterly 10 to 15 knots during the evening, with seas 1 to 1.5 metres. However, Sundays forecast for much lighter winds is looking pretty good , so be ready to go. It will be worth hunting for snapper, Maori cod and tusk fish from Murphy’s Reef. Snapper, sweetlip, big cobia and moses perch from the Blinker. There have been Moses perch, flathead, gold spot cod and snapper from the gneerings. Snapper, jewfish, quality spangled emperor, hussar and venus tusk fish from the Barwon Banks. Snapper, pig fish, parrot and pearl perch from the Hards. Coral trout, grass sweetlip and snapper from Sunshien Reef. North Reef caught pearl perch, moses perch, coral bream, venus tusk fish, snapper, Maori cod and plenty of good cobia. Crews on Baitrunner from, Rainbow Beach Reef Fishing Charters have taken good snapper, pearl perch, red throat emperor, sweetlip, tusk fish, hussar, moses perch and mulloway 20nm east of Wide Bay Bar recently. Cobia, gold spot cod, tusk fish, gold band snapper, big pearl fish and snapper from Double Island Point.

Out from Hervey Bay: Spanish mackerel, mac tuna and long tail tuna are feeding throughout platypus bay. School mackerel, mac tuna and long tail tuna from Burrum 8 mile.

Estuaries and Beaches

Fraser Island: There has been patches of weed in the gutters along the eastern beaches with less in the northern area so best results will be in the cleaner areas without weed where there have been dart, whiting, trevally, bream along the eastern beaches gutters. Good tailor have been plentiful north of the Maheno Wreck and around Happy Valley. Bigger jew near Yidney Rocks. Hervey Bay: The next couple of months will have the flathead feeding from the Creek mouths along the western side of Fraser Island and from the lower Burrum River. Flathead and cod from River heads. Trevally, mangrove jack, threadfin salmon, barra and queenfish from the middle and upper Burrum river. Threadfin Salmon and barramundi in the Mary and Susan rivers.

Rainbow Beach: Tailor, kingfish, mackerel, bream and snapper off the rocks at Double Island Point. Spotty mackerel and long tail tuna from the barge crossing channel. Tailor, bream, flathead and dart along the beaches and Inskip Point. Tailor from Middle rock. Flathead between rainbow and double Island Point. A few flathead and bream from Carlow Point. Barramundi, mangrove jack and estuary cod in Kauri Creek.
Local Dams and Rivers: Healthy bass at Lake Macdonald, not too big but fun on light gear, try spinnerbaits and jig spinners rigged on paddle tail soft plastics such as Nories Inlet Shads. Casting in close to the lily pads is has been producing good fish. Lake McDonald has also had good schooling bass in the northern facing bays along with Bass and saratoga in the timbers on surface lures. In Borumba Dam yellowbelly are taking lure and bait in the timbers. The odd saratoga and plenty of bass on surface lures. Quality bass in the timbers as well. Bass and sooty grunter in upper Mary River and its tributaries.

Okay conditions including the Full Moon today with winds North to northwesterly about 10 knots increasing to 15 to 20 knots from the early afternoon and seas below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. Offshore

Good conditions Today with winds south to southeasterly about 10 knots becoming east to northeasterly in the middle of the day and seas below 1 metre. Fantastic conditions for tomorrow with winds variable about 10 knots, with seas . Below 1 metre. So get ready to chase a few snapper, Maori cod and tusk fish from Murphy’s Reef. Snapper, sweetlip and moses perch from the Blinker. There have been Moses perch, flathead, gold spot cod, big cobia to 50kg and snapper from the gneerings. Wild Thing 2 crews fished Sunshine Reef where they got some nice tuskies, squire, grassy sweetlip, coral bream and coral trout. Trekka 2 crews also fished The Banks on Sunday, conditions were a bit ordinary but they caught snapper, jewfish, quality spangled emperor, hussar and venus tusk fish. Cougar One fished, Double Island Point where crews caught cobia, gold spot cod, tusk fish, gold band snapper, big pearl fish and almost bagged out on snapper. We also saw the first few tuna for the year. North Reef caught pearl perch, moses perch, coral bream, venus tusk fish, snapper, Maori cod and plenty of good cobia.
