Local Fishing Report: Tuesday 2017-08-15

Offshore

More great winter conditions with winds northwest to southwesterly about 10 knots becoming variable below 10 knots during the morning. Winds tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the late afternoon and northerly 10 to 15 knots in the evening wiith seas below 1 metre. Tomorrow looks like deteriorating to be choppy in the morning to rough by afternoon with winds north to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots increasing to 20 to 25 knots in the early afternoon. North Reefs has had pearl perch, cod, sweetlip, cobia and snapper. School and spotty mackerel in close between Mooloolaba and Mudjimba. Snapper, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, gold spot wrasse, rosey job fish and moses perch from the Hards. Venus tusk fish, snapper, gold spot wrasse, pearl perch and moses perch from the banks. Snapper, sweetlip and moses perch from the Blinker. Snapper and tusk fish from Murphy’s Reef. Snapper and spangled emperor form Murphy’s Reef.  Sweetlip, tusk fish and snapper from Coolum Reef. Snapper from the NW fairway beacon, brays rock and the coffee rock off the tip of Bribie.

Estuaries and Beaches

Noosa: Flathead, whiting and bream were in good numbers at the river mouth and at the bottom of the Dog Beach. Good flathead to 70cm, cale cale trevally, golden trevally and tailor in Woods Bay. Flathead from the river mouth, in between the lakes and along Tewantin stretch. Grunter bream, queenfish and trevally along the Tewantin stretch. Whiting and bream along Gympie Terrace.

Maroochydore: Tailor, whiting and tarwhine along from Mudjimba and Marcoola in the surf gutter and in the river mouth. Big bream to 38cm and flathead along Twin Waters stretch and Cotton Tree. Flathead in the creeks and Bli Bli stretch. Quality whiting on the run out tide from Chambers Island and Black banks. A few reasonable estuary cod been caught as well as diamond trevally, gt’s, tailor and jew in the Cod Hole particularly at night along with the odd Luderick from the motorway bridge pylons.

Mooloolaba: Been a few school mackerel caught on pilchards off the Rock walls at the river mouth. Squid from the lower river. Tailor, flathead, bream and tarwhine in the gutter south of Point Cartwright. Bream and tailor from the rock walls and moorings. Flathead in the La Balsa Sand basin. Bream, tailor and Trevally around the boat moorings. Flathead and Bream from McKenzies Bridge. Sand crabs between Minyama Island and the mouth.

Caloundra: A few good squid off the rocks on jigs from Shelly and Kings Beaches. Whiting and bream along Dicky Beach. Tailor and flathead from the Northern tip of Bribie. Giant and golden trevally on lure in Pelican waters Canal. Bream, jew, trevally, luderick and flathead off the boardwalk. Whiting, bream, dusky flathead and grunter particularly from the creek mouths of and throughout the Passage.

Winds will be north to northwesterly at 10 to 15 knots. Winds becoming variable about 10 knots in the afternoon. With seas nelow 1 metre, increasing to around 1 metre during the morning. North Reefs has had pearl perch, cod, sweetlip, cobia and snapper.  Been plenty of school mackerel caught on pilchards off the Mooloolaba Rock Walls at the river mouth and around Pt Cartwright over the past couple of days. School and spotty mackerel in close between Mooloolaba and Mudjimba. Snapper, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, gold spot wrasse, rosey job fish and moses perch from the Hards. Fantastic weather and offshore conditions today with winds west to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable about 10 knots during the morning then becoming north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon with seas below 1 metre. The crews on Top Catch Charters did well with plenty of snapper this one was 70cm on soft plastics at the Barwon Banks.

Out from Hervey Bay the southern gutters and northern gutter have had coral trout, red emperor, mangrove jack, cod, sweetlip, tusk fish and nannygai. Quality snapper from Burrum 8 mile, 6 mile arch cliffs, 25 fathom hole and Wathumba coffee rock patches. Cobia, mackerel and golden trevally in Platypus bay around the bait schools. Jew fish from the rocky outcrops, ledges and holes in the straights. Snapper, cod, trevally and blackall from the artificial reef. Double Island Point closer reeds have had jew, hussar, pearl perch and Cobia. Tusk fish, nannygai, pearl perch, moses perch, sweetlip, spangled emperor red emperor, long tail tuna and cod about 20nm north and 15nm east of Wide Bay Bar.

Estuaries and Beaches

Fraser Island: Whiting, bream, dart and Spanish mackerel in the gutters. Best to travel on low tide.

Hervey Bay: Jew off Urangan boat harbour walls. Flathead, bream, tuna and jew from Urangan Pier. Squid around the rock ledges and weed beds. Winter Whiting from Gatakers Bay, toogum, Dundowran and Woodgate. Grunter in the creeks. Flathead and bream from Kingfisher Bay. Grunter in the creeks.

Rainbow Beach: Spotty mackerel and long tail tuna from the barge crossing channel. Tailor, bream, flathead and dart along the beaches and Inskip Point. Tailor from Middle rock. Flathead between rainbow and double Island Point. A few flathead and bream from Carlow Point. Golden trevally, cod and barramundi in Kauri Creek.

Local Dams and Rivers: Lake McDonald has had good schooling bass in the northern facing bays alogn with Bass and saratoga in the timbers on surface lures. In Borumba Dam yellowbelly are taking lure and bait in the timbers. The odd saratoga and plenty of bass on surface lures. School bass are taking blades and ice jigs tight against the timbers as well. Good bass and golden perch on lures and live shrimp in the Mary River and its tributaries.

Fantastic conditions today with south to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots decreasing to about 10 knots in the morning then becoming east to southeasterly in the late afternoon with seas below 1 metre. Evan better conditions tomorrow with winds variable about 10 knots becoming northerly 10 to 15 knots in the early afternoon and seas below 1 metre, increasing to around 1 metre by early evening. Trekka 2 crews fished The Hards where they caught snapper, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, gold spot wrasse, tailor and moses perch." Sunshine and North Reefs has had coral trout, a few quality snapper, tusk fish, grass sweetlip and lots of pearl perch. Double island Point has had red emperor, long tail tuna, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, hussar, jobfish, pearl perch, spangled emperor and heaps of good tuskies. Snapper, hussar and tusk fish from the Hards. Good snapper, red throat emperor and pearl perch from the banks. Snapper to 85cm, cobia, sweetlip and moses perch from the Blinker. Pearl perch venus tusk fish, moses perch from Wide Caloundra. School mackerel, cod and sweetlip from Currimundi reef. Cod, sweetlip, tusk fish and pearl perch from Coolum Reef.

Guys on a Noosa River Fishing Safari caught and released a 63cm flathead and a queen fish around Tewantin using whitebait. Good trevally feeding throughout the river and a few diamond trevally in the lower river. Flathead from the river mouth and along Tewantin stretch. There are plenty of bream and a few sand crabs throughout the lower river. Grunter bream between the lakes. Try for luderick at the rocks at the river mouth.

Beautiful winter conditions continuing through the week with winds today a bit choppy out wide early easing back in the afternoon with northwesterly 15 to 20 knots becoming westerly 10 to 15 knots in the middle of the day then becoming southwesterly 15 to 20 knots in the late evening with seas 1 to 1.5 metres. Tomorrow will have south to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots turning east to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon then becoming south to southeasterly about 10 knots during the evening and seas 1 to 2 metres, decreasing below 1 metre during the afternoon or evening. Tomorrow will have ideal conditions particularly earl right through the morning with winds variable about 10 knots becoming northerly 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon and seas below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the evening. Beautiful winter conditions right through the weekend with winds today north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots, and becoming choppy reaching up to 20 knots inshore early in the morning with seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore south of Maroochydore. Tomorrow will have ideal conditions particularly later in the day with winds west to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable 10 knots in the afternoon and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore. With Sunday looking excellent with light SSW winds. Sunshine Reef has had coral trout, small snapper, tusk fish, grass sweetlip and lots of pearl perch. Double island Point has had red emperor, long tail tuna, gold spot wrasse, moses perch, hussar, jobfish, pearl perch, spangled emperor and heaps of good tuskies. Out from Hervey Bay the southern gutters have had coral trout, mackerel, cobia, tusk fish, sweetlip and cod. Trevally, school mackerel and snapper in Platypus bay, Burrum 8 mile and 6 mile arch cliffs. Bream and trevally from Kingfisher bay. Double Island Point has had jew, hussar, pearl perch and Cobia. Tusk fish, nannygai, moses perch, sweetlip, spangled emperor red emperor and cobia long tail tuna and cod about 20nm north and 15nm east of Wide Bay Bar.

Fraser Island: Whiting, bream, dart and Spanish mackerel in the gutters. Best to travel on low tide.

Hervey Bay: Jew off Urangan boat harbour walls. Flathead and bream from Urangan Pier. Squid around the rock ledges and weed beds. Winter Whiting throughout the sand straights.

Rainbow Beach: Tailor, bream, flathead and dart along the beaches and Inskip Point School mackerel from Inskip Point. A few flathead and bream from Carlow Point. Golden trevally, cod and barramundi in Kauri Creek.
Local Dams and Rivers: In Borumba Dam the cooler weather has the bass schooling in the deeper holes, so best to use your sounder to locate the fish and use Ice Jigs Sooty Grunter, good bass and golden perch on lures and live shrimp in the Mary River and its tributaries.
