2018 Fishing Reports

Extended Fishing Report: Friday 2018-05-18

Offshore

Today conditions will be much better with winds southeasterly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable about 10 knots during the evening. and seas around 1 metre. Tomorrow will have great conditions with beautiful sunny weather with winds variable about 10 knots and seas below 1 metre. So be ready to go, Sunshine Reef has also had good Spanish mackerel and yellow tail kingfish nice coral trout and grass sweetlip also a few cobia, quality Spanish mackerel,off Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra. Out on the reefs off Double Island catches of yellowfin tuna, Spanish mackerel, pearlies, jew cobia, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, hussar and gold spot wrasse and mahi mahi. Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from the Barwon Banks. Out on the reefs off the Wide Bay Bar and Double Island there were some excellent catches of tuna, Spanish mackerel, pearlies, jew, cobia, red and spangled emperor, scarlet sea perch, hussar and gold spot wrasse and a few mahi mahi.

Out and around Hervey Bay: The New Moon Phase this week has the fish on the bite. There's still plenty of good mackeral, long tail tuna, threadfin and good mud crabs to be taken.in the area and there have been some excellent catches of big golden trevally and Queenfish up to 120cm in the Bay. Alsoa few sand crabs to be taken around Burrum Heads.There have been a few good sweetlip, cod and coral trout on the local reefs from Kingfisher Bay to Moon Point. Longtail tuna and a few spotty mackerel have been taken in Platypus Bay. There have been few coral trout, grassy sweetlip, blackall, good cod, tusk fish, and mackerel on the inshore reefs. Great Sandy Strait, is still producing, Barramundi, and threadfin salmon around the mouth of the Mary River including whiting, flathead and bream throughout. Barramundi and threadfin salmon in the lower Mary and Susan River. Estuaries and Beaches

Fraser Island: Target dart, whiting, bream, chopper tailor and jew at night along the eastern beach gutters. Caution is still required for beach travel, so best to use the bypass tracks where rocks are expose when required. On the western side of Fraser island there’s been plenty of whiting and catches of flathead and trevally, while in the creeks and the flats there’s a few good grunter bream, still schools of banana prawns and quality the muddies .

Rainbow Beach: A few good whiting, bream and dart up the beach and around Inskip Point. Target jew particularly at night and tailor in the gutters and go for flathead, dart, whiting in the gutters at Rainbow Beach, Double Island Point and Teewah Beach. Tin Can Bay is fishing well for a few chopper tailor whiting, bream, flathead, Trevally and mangrove jack in the snaggy areas in the creeks and a few good muddies.

Local Dams and Rivers: In the Dams quality saratoga and yellowbelly feeding at present. Also there has been excellent catches of Barramundi in Lake Monduran. In the local dams closer to home there have been reports of good bass and yellobelly caught on soft plastics, caught on soft plastics, on blades, tail spinners and TN's. Borumba Dam has bass and saratoga still hitting lures and fly particully on Jackall tn60 lures. Plenty of quality bass and golden perch on trolled lures from the junctions in Boondooma Dam. Mooloolaba: Good size bream around the rocks walls and Jetties in the lower river. Trevally and flathead from La Balsa Basin. Mud crabs and some quality flathead in the creeks and canals.

Caloundra: Bream and the odd chopper tailor feeding around the bar and throughout the passage. Whiting, bream and flathead along the golden beach stretch. Muddies in the creeks.

Conditions still choppy with winds southeasterly 15 to 20 knots.and seas 1.5 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday. Conditions choppy particularly out wide today and rough this evening with winds south to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots offshore south of Maroochydore in the evening and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the morning. Similar conditions tomorrow with a southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the morning. Sunshine Reef has also had  nice coral trout and grass sweetlip.  A few cobia, quality Spanish mackerel, Long tail tuna out from Sunshine Reef, off Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra. DIP Fishing Charters Mackerel

The crews on Double Island Fishing Charters have been doing well for quality Spanish mackerel, from around D.I.P.

Good conditions close inshore and lumpy out wide will continue today with winds southerly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1.5 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday. Similar conditions tomorrow with a south to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the morning. Offshore

Conditions out wide will be a bit choppy to rough  particularly in the late afternoon with a southerly 10 to 15 knots, reaching up to 20 knots at times offshore. Winds increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the late afternoon or evening and reaching up to 25 knots offshore with seas about 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 2 metres by early evening. Maroochydore: A few big prawns schooling up around the Cod Hole yesterday. Try for tailor, trevally and jew at night in the Cod Hole. Flathead to 59cm yesterday around Chambers Island and Picnic Point. Bream and nice golden trevally from the river mouth. After the rain there are heaps of mud crabs throughout the river.

Mooloolaba: Chopper tailor and some good size bream around the rocks walls and Jetties in the lower river. Trevally and flathead from La Balsa Basin. Mud crabs and some quality flathead in the creeks and canals.

Caloundra: Bream and the odd chopper tailor feeding around the bar and throughout the passage. Whiting, bream and flathead along the golden beach stretch. Chopper tailor and grunter bream from the mouth of Coochin Creek. Muddies in the creeks.

Offshore

Unfortunately conditions will become choppy and rough later particularly out wide away from the protection of the coast with winds continuing to strengthen to a north to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots shifting southwesterly early in the morning. Winds reaching up to 25 knots at times offshore during the morning with seas 1 to 2 metres. Tomorrow conditions will be calmer close inshore but choppy and rough away from the immediate coastline, particularly out wide as winds will be west to southwesterly 15 to 25 knots and seas 1.5 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. A 12 kg Amerjack and several sweetlip caught by our mate Ollie off Mooloolaba yesterday.  Recently on Trekka 2's charter to North  and Sunshine Reef's the crews caught grass sweetlip, Maori cod, venus tusk fish, pearl perch, nice size snapper and Moses perch. Sunshine Reef has also had  nice coral trout and grass sweetlip.  A few cobia, quality Spanish mackerel, Long tail tuna out from Sunshine Reef, off Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra. Out on the reefs off Double Island catches of yellowfin tuna, Spanish mackerel, pearlies, big jew / mulloway, cobia, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, hussar and gold spot wrasse and mahi mahi.

Winds will be Okay early then strengthening in the afternoon with variable below 10 knots, becoming west to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots in the late morning. Winds becoming northerly 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon and increasing to 20 to 25 knots south of Maroochydore in evening  with seas below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening. Tomorrow conditions choppy and rough particularly out wide as winds pick up with winds northwesterly 15 to 20 knots turning west to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots during the day and seas 1 to 2 metres. Winds will be pretty good particularly early with variable about 10 knots becoming south to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the morning with seas below 1 metre. Okay conditions through out the morning tomorrow with winds variable about 10 knots becoming northerly 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon and seas below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the evening. While conditions are good get out and try for some spotted mackerel and long tail tuna in Laguna Bay. On Trekka 2's charter to North  and Sunshine Reef's the crews caught grass sweetlip, Maori cod, venus tusk fish, pearl perch, nice size snapper and Moses perch. Yesterday, Sunshine Reef has also had  nice coral trout and grass sweetlip.  A few cobia, quality Spanish mackerel, Long tail tuna out from Sunshine Reef, off Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra. Out on the reefs off Double Island catches of yellowfin tuna, Spanish mackerel, pearlies, big jew / mulloway, cobia, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, hussar and gold spot wrasse and mahi mahi.

Winds easing back a little with east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots, reaching up to 20 knots offshore early in the morning. Winds tending east to southeasterly during the morning with seas 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning. Better conditions tomorrow with winds southerly 10 to 15 knots decreasing to about 10 knots during the evening and seas below 1 metre, so be ready to go and hit the reefs. When conditions improve get out and try for some spotted mackerel and long tail tuna in Laguna Bay. Spanish mackerel on all of the local reefs. Cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef and the Barwon Banks. Long tail tuna out from Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra. Double Island Point has good tuskies, moses perch,hussar, snapper, gold spot estuary cod and Maori cod. Good mackerel, few coral trout, cod, snapper and parrot at North Reef. Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef and the Barwon Banks. Out on the reefs off the Wide Bay Bar and Double Island there were some excellent catches of yellowfin tuna, Spanish mackerel, pearlies, big jew / mulloway, cobia, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, hussar and gold spot wrasse and mahi mahi.

Several good tailor, trevally and jew at night in the Cod Hole and along Oyster Bank Road, as well as a 2.5 kg mangrove jack taken near Cotton Tree over night. Flathead around Chambers Island and Picnic Point. Flathead from Picnic point. Bream and nice golden trevally from the river mouth. Still big mud crabs throughout the river.

Mooloolaba: Chopper tailor and some good size bream around the rocks walls and Jetties in the lower river. Trevally and flathead from La Balsa Basin and mangrove jack around the structures and rock walls. Mud crabs and some quality flathead in the creeks and canals.

Caloundra: Bream and grass sweetlip off the rocks at Moffat beach. Trevally, bream and the odd chopper tailor feeding throughout the passage. Whiting, bream and flathead along the golden beach stretch. Chopper tailor and grunter bream from the mouth of Coochin Creek. Muddies in the creeks.

Local Fishing Report: Saturday 2018-05-05

Offshore

Good conditions early morning before the change then strengthening winds making it rough in the afternoon with winds today variable about 10 knots becoming west to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots in the morning then shifting southeasterly 20 to 25 knots in the middle of the day and seas below 0.5 metres, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday, then increasing to 1.5 to 2.5 metres during the afternoon.Tomorrow conditions will be rough so stay in sheltered waters with winds southeasterly 15 to 25 knots and seas 1.5 to 2 metres.  Spotted mackerel and long tail tuna in Laguna Bay. Spanish mackerel on all of the local reefs. Cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef and the Barwon Banks. Long tail tuna out from Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra. Double Island Point has good tuskies, moses perch,hussar, snapper, gold spot estuary cod and Maori cod. Good mackerel, few coral trout, cod, snapper and parrot at North Reef. Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef and the Barwon Banks. Out on the reefs off the Wide Bay Bar and Double Island there were some excellent catches of yellowfin tuna, Spanish mackerel, pearlies, big jew / mulloway, cobia, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, hussar and gold spot wrasse and mahi mahi. 

Estuaries and Beaches

Noosa: Get ready its nearly time for the luderick to be on around the rocks near the river mouth. Also good whiting, tailor, flathead, a few good bream and trevally from the River mouth and lower river. A few queenfish, trevally in Woods bays. Plenty of bream throughout the river Mud crabs throughout the upper reaches of the river.

Maroochydore: Herring are schooling up again. Several good tailor yesterday, trevally and jew at night in the Cod Hole and along Oyster Bank Road, as well as a 2.5 kg mangrove jack taken near Cotton Tree over night. Flathead around Chambers Island and Picnic Point. Flathead from Picnic point. Bream and nice golden trevally from the river mouth. Still big mud crabs throughout the river.

Mooloolaba: Chopper tailor and some good size bream around the rocks walls and Jetties in the lower river. Trevally and flathead from La Balsa Basin and mangrove jack around the structures and rock walls. Mud crabs and some quality flathead in the creeks and canals.

Caloundra: Bream and grass sweetlip off the rocks at Moffat beach. Trevally, bream and the odd chopper tailor feeding throughout the passage. Whiting, bream and flathead along the golden beach stretch. Chopper tailor and grunter bream from the mouth of Coochin Creek. Muddies in the creeks.

Extended Fishing Report: Friday 2018-05-04

Offshore

At last, conditions have eased right back with winds today northeast to northwesterly about 10 knots and seas below 1 metre. So be ready to go,because unfortunately winds will increasing Saturday afternoon and more on Sunday to be a southeasterly around 25 knots. Tomorrow conditions will only be okay early morning before strengthening. Go for Spotted mackerel and long tail tuna in Laguna Bay. Spanish mackerel on all of the local reefs. Cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef and the Barwon Banks. Long tail tuna out from Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra. Double Island Point has good tuskies, moses perch,hussar, snapper, gold spot estuary cod and Maori cod. Good mackerel, few coral trout, cod, snapper and parrot at North Reef. Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef and the Barwon Banks. Out on the reefs off the Wide Bay Bar and Double Island there were some excellent catches of yellowfin tuna, Spanish mackerel, pearlies, big jew / mulloway, cobia, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, hussar and gold spot wrasse and mahi mahi.

Out and around Hervey Bay

May is typically the transition time between the summer and winter species, so be ready to go for snapper, jew, tailor, bream whiting and luderick, however there will still be plenty of mackeral, tuna, threadfin and good mud crabs to be taken. Longtail and mack tuna and a few good spotty mackerel have been taken in Platypus Bay. There have been few coral trout, grassy sweetlip, blackall, good cod, tusk fish, and mackerel on the inshore reefs. Coral trout, moses perch, nannygai, tuskfish and spanish mackerel on the reefs out from Roonies. Great Sandy Strait, is producing, Barramundi, and threadfin salmon around the mouth of the Mary River including whiting, flathead and bream throughout. Barramundi and threadfin salmon in the lower Mary and Susan River. Barramundi, bream, grunter, whiting and Mangrove Jack in the lower Burrum River. There’s queenfish, golden trevally and giant trevally and a few barred and school mackerel around the Urangan Pier/Jetty. Banana prawns are running out from Maaroom, Boonooroo, Poona and Ungowa. Estuaries and Beaches

Fraser Island: Target dart, whiting, bream, trevally and chopper tailor and jew at night along the eastern beach gutters. On the western side of Fraser island there’s been plenty of whiting and catches of flathead and trevally, while in the creeks and the flats there’s a few good grunter bream, good schools of banana prawns and quality the muddies and some solid flathead have also been reported.

Rainbow Beach: Try for whiting, bream, flathead and dart up around Inskip Point. Target jew particularly at night and tailor in the gutters and go for flathead, dart, whiting in the gutters at Rainbow Beach, Double Island Point and Teewah Beach. Tin Can Bay is fishing well for whiting, bream, flathead, Trevally and mangrove jack in the snaggy areas in the creeks and a few good muddies. Mangrove jack, flathead, estuary cod and mud crabs in Kauri Creek. A few good flathead, bream, trevally and mackerel from the Barge Crossing.

Local Dams and Rivers: In the Dams quality bass, saratoga and yellowbelly feeding at present. Also ther has been excellent catches of Barramundi in Lake Monduran. In the local dams closer to home there have been reports of good bass and yellobelly caught on soft plastics, on blades, tail spinners and TN's. Borumba Dam has bass and saratoga still hitting lures and fly particully on Jackall tn60 lures. Plenty of quality bass and golden perch on trolled lures from the junctions in Boondooma Dam. Local Fishing Report: Thursday 2018-05-03

Offshore

At last, conditions are easing back with today's winds south to southeasterly about 10 knots, tending easterly during the morning with seas below 1 metre. Tomorrow conditions will ease right back even further and be perfect for going offshore with winds variable about 10 knots and seas below 0.5 metres. So as the wind drops right out be ready to go for Spotted mackerel and long tail tuna in Laguna Bay. Spanish mackerel on all of the local reefs. Snapper, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef and the Barwon Banks. Long tail tuna out from Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra.
