Extended Fishing Report: Friday 2018-08-03

Offshore

Great fishing conditions for today and right through the weekend with warm and sunny weather combined with light north to north westerly winds and seas below a metre, so be ready to go for it. Today winds will be easterly 10 to 15 knots turning northeasterly during the afternoon with seas below 1 metre. Double Island Point has had quality snapper, big spangled emperor, moses perch, venus tusk fish, jobfish, hussar, Maori cod and gold spot wrasse. North Reef's had good snapper, moses perch, tusk fish, pearl perch and cobia. Grass sweetlip, cobia, cod, quality snapper and tusk fish from the Barwon Banks. Snapper, cobia, pearl perch, tusk fish from Caloundra 12 mile. Snapper, grass sweetlp, moses perch and parrot from Murphy's and the Gneerings. Big grass sweetlip around Old Women Island. Snapper and Sweetlip around Brays Rock. Last week the crew in the Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic weighed in some fantastic quality reef fish and pelagics, like solid cobia, a huge Spanish Mackerel, great knobby snapper, monster jew, big Red Emperor, quality pearl perch, sweetlip, and nice tusk fish North of Double Island Point and East of the Wide Bay Bar. Pearl perch, red emperor, snapper, tusk fish, sweetlip and moses perch 20nm NE of Wide Bay Bar.

Out and around Hervey Bay: Trout, tuskfish, snapper and sweetlip have been taken on the 25 fathom reef and in the southern and northern gutters. Snapper and sweetlip from Roy Rufus artificial reef. Broad bar mackerel are feeding throughout the bay and are taking metal slugs. School and spanish mackerel from the fairway buoy, moon ledge and Six Mile Arch Cliffs. Bigger bream from most of the rocky outcrops Chopper tailor throughout the Burrum River, from River Heads and off Urangan pier. A few thread fin salmon, grunter bream and reasonable flathead in the creeks that feed into the Straits. Squid are scattered throughout the Great Sandy Straits. The winter whiting are on so try around Gatakers Bay and Toogoom. Sand whiting on the beaches between Burrum Heads and Uranagan. Bream, mulloway and squid off Urangan Jetty.

Estuaries and Beaches

Fraser Island: If your planning a fishing trip to Fraser Island please remember about the closure of regulated waters during the annual tailor run. The closed season applies from midday, last Wednesday the 1st August to midday 30th September 2018. The closure is in place to protect tailor where they congregate for spawning and to help ensure the sustainability of this important recreational species for future generations. During the closure, the taking of all fin fish is prohibited within an area from a point 400m north of Waddy Point to a point 400m south of Indian Head, and 400m out to sea from low water. There have been some bigger tailor from the Maheno area and around Cathedrals and further up in northern areas. Mulloway in the deeper gutters along the eastern beach, particularly overnight. Whiting, bream and good dart in the shallow gutters. On the western side of Fraser island there’s been plenty of whiting and catches of flathead and trevally, while in the creeks and the flats there’s a few good solid bream bream, flathead still the odd mud crab and sand crabs on offer.

Rainbow Beach: There were some great catches of big bream, dart, whiting and tailor form the beaches and in the bay. Good jew have been moving through the gutters particularly at night and try for chopper tailor at dawn and dusk and go for flathead, dart, whiting in the gutters through the day at Rainbow Beach, Double Island Point and Teewah Beach. A few good whiting, bream and dart up the beach and around Inskip Point. Tin Can Bay is fishing well for a few chopper tailor whiting, plenty of good bream, flathead, sand crabs and trevally.

Local Dams and Rivers: In Lake MacDonald the best action at present is in the deeper water in the main basin of the lake where good bass in numbers are being caught. The fishing will improve further towards the end of the month and through September with more good fish to be taken on hopping blades and soft vibes. The Switchblades have the action for good bass out of the Tiaro stretch of the Mary River so get some 1/4 or 1/2 oz TT blades. Borumba Dam has had bass taken on soft and hard lure in the main Basin have a go at Borumba Flat which is at the end of the basin as well as the junction of the Yabba and Kingham arms around the 10 m depths. Ice Jigs, 1/4 oz blades,spoons and tail spinners will all produce fish, wish catches to 50 cm. Boondooma Dam has been fishing well for excellent bass with the schooling fish feeding close to the bottom in many areas of the main basin. Maroochydore: Tailor and dart off Maroochy beach. Bream, flathead, and tailor from the sand bags and north shore. Tailor, cale cale trevally, golden and giant trevally from the cod hole. Quality bream from the motorway bridge pylons and along Oyster bank road. Flathead and good bream from around Goat and Channel Islands.

Mooloolaba: A few quality tailor along Kawana and Wurtulla Beach at dawn and dusk. A few good tailor and golden trevally in the lower river. Quality bream around McKenzies Bridge, the rock walls and the Kawana Boat Ramp. Average size grass sweetlip and big bream off the rocks at Point Cartwright. Gar in the La Balsa sand basin. Sand crabs in Kawana Waters.

Caloundra: Bream and flathead in Currimundi Lake. Whiting, bream and tailor along the beach between Currimundi and Moffat heas. Bream and tailor from Shelly Beach. Luderick, bream, tailor and flathead off the boardwalk. Bream, flathead and whiting along Golden beach. Trevally, cod, tailor and bream in Pelican Waters Canal.

Offshore

Great fishing conditions for today and right through into the weekend with warm and sunny weather combined with lighter winds and seas so be ready to go for it. Today winds will be variable about 10 knots becoming south to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the middle of the day then tending east to southeasterly in the late afternoon with seas below 1 metre. Tomorrow conditions will be okay as well with winds easterly 10 to 15 knots turning northeasterly during the afternoon and seas below 1 metre. North Reef's had good snapper, moses perch, tusk fish, pearl perch and cobia. Grass sweetlip, cobia, cod, quality snapper and tusk fish from the Barwon Banks. Snapper, cobia, pearl perch, tusk fish from Caloundra 12 mile. Snapper, grass sweetlp, moses perch and parrot from Murphy's and the Gneerings. Big grass sweetlip around Old Women Island. Snapper and Sweetlip around Brays Rock. Double Island Point has had quality snapper, big spangled emperor, moses perch, venus tusk fish, jobfish, hussar, Maori cod and gold spot wrasse. Last week the crew in the Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic weighed in some fantastic quality reef fish and pelagics, like solid cobia, a huge Spanish Mackerel, great knobby snapper, monster jew, big Red Emperor, quality pearl perch, sweetlip, and nice tusk fish from the reefs in there local area.

Noosa: Quality tailor, a few whiting and bream and good dart along Teewah Beach. Luderick from the rock walls in the lower river. Whiting to 500 grams bream and plenty of good quality flathead from throughout the river. Trevally along the Tewantin Reach and in Noosa Sound. Bream around the bridges and rocky areas of the lower river.

Maroochydore: Tailor and dart off Maroochy Beach and bream, flathead, and tailor from the sand bags and north shore. Try for some better quality whiting around Chambers Island. Plenty of bream particularly over night from the motorway bridge pylons and along Oyster bank road. Flathead and bream from around Goat and Channel Islands.

Mooloolaba: A few quality tailor along Kawana and Wurtulla Beach at dawn and dusk. A few good tailor and golden trevally in the lower river. Bream around McKenzies Bridge, the rock walls and the Kawana Boat Ramp. Average size grass sweetlip and big bream off the rocks at Point Cartwright. Gar in the La Balsa sand basin. Sand crabs in Kawana Waters.

Excellent conditions with winds northwesterly about 10 knots, becoming variable in the morning, with inshore seabreezes developing in the afternoon.with seas below 0.5 metres.  While tomorrow will also be pretty good with winds variable about 10 knots becoming south to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the middle of the day then tending east to southeasterly in the late afternoon and seas below 1 metre. Offshore

Great conditions with winds southeast to southwesterly about 10 knots shifting east to northeasterly during the afternoon with seas below 1 metre. While tomorrow will be excellent particularly early with winds Variable about 10 knots becoming northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon and seas below 1 metre. Cougar One skipper Theo Hewish took a nine hour charter to Double Island Point where they caught big spangled emperor, moses perch, venus tusk fish, jobfish, hussar, Maori cod and gold spot wrasse. Trekka 2 did a charter to North Reef on Sunday morning. Local Fishing Report: Monday 2018-07-30

Offshore

Winds will be blowing northwest to southwesterly at 10 to 15 knots tending south to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots early in the morning. Winds then shifting southerly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon. D.I.P has had good tusk fish, hussar, longtail tuna, big eye tuna, pearl perch, snapper and a nice Spanish mackerel. Sunshine Reef has had snapper, tusk fish and quality coral trout. North Reef has had snapper, moses perch, coral bream, teraglin jewfish, pearl perch and a cracker Maori cod as well as Spanish mackerel, yellow tail kingfish and grass sweetlip and also a few cobia. Grass sweetlip, cobia, cod, quality snapper and tusk fish from the Barwon Banks. Snapper, cobia, pearl perch, tusk fish from Caloundra 12 mile.
