Local Fishing Report: Wednesday 2014-12-31

Offshore

Reasonable conditions for offshore with, northwesterly 10 to 15 knots turning northeasterly in the middle of the day. Seas around 1 metre. There have been some good catches of spotty and Spanish mackerel right along the coast off Currimundi, Caloundra 12 mile Coolum and at Sunshine Reef. There are good reports from Caloundra 12 Mile and the Banks for spanish mackerel, spotted mackerel and mahi mahi on the surface, with parrot and sweetlip on the bottom. Barwon Banks produced quality maori cod, mahi mahi, snapper and red throat emperor. Murphys produced good hussar, moses perch, mulloway and cobia.

Estuaries

Noosa: A few big tailor to 74cm and whiting and dart along Teewah Beach. Quality mangrove jack, bream, trevally, tailor and whiting at the Noosa River mouth. Also mangrove jack and bream in Weyba Creek, the Tewantin reach. Woods Bay and in the snaggy areas in the upper reaches. Mud crabs in the upper reaches and sand crabs in the lower reaches.

Maroochydore: There are big whiting in the lower river with several good catches yesterday up to 40cm. Whiting and flathead in the southern channel. Trevally, tailor yesterday and school jew at night in the cod hole and upper reaches of Eudlo and Petrie Creeks. Sand crabs in the south channel and a few good mud crabs in the upper reaches.

Kawana: Dart and bream at the washing machine on the southern side of Pt Cartwright. Bream around the moorings and along La Balsa Park. Have a go for mangrove jack up to 58cm in the canals, Mountain Creek and around McKenzies Bridge. Mud crabs in the upper reaches of the river and the creeks. Sand crabs towards the river mouth.

Caloundra: Try for small snapper at dawn and dusk off the rocks at Shelly Beach. Trevally, whiting and dart along Currimundi Beach and inside the Caloundra bar. Plenty of whiting, bream, flathead and moses perch along the Boardwalk area. Mangrove jack around the pontoons in Pelican Waters Canals. Whiting opposite the Power Boat Club, off Moffat Beach and in Currimundi Lake. Jack and trevally in the creeks that feed into the Passage. Sand crabs throughout the passage.

DaveElbo Slappers

Local angler Dave Kajewski fished off the sand banks off the northern side of Chambers Island for big elbow slapper whiting to 40cm.
