2014 Fishing Reports

Local Fishing Report: Monday 2014-09-15

Offshore

Choppy conditions today with winds northerly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots offshore in the late evening and Seas and swell 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1 to 2 metres offshore by early evening. There have been reports of tuna feeding close in along the coast. The Barwon Banks have had some good catch’s of snapper, cobia, tusk fish pearlies and parrot. Massoud’s Reef produced quality pearl perch and Maori cod.  Good snapper, sweetlip and parrot from the Blinker. Snapper, Spanish mackerel and tusk fish from Sunshine Beach. Tusk fish, snapper, Maori Cod from the Caloundra 9 mile.

Estuaries

Noosa: Golden trevally to 53cm off Gympie terrace and excellent quality whiting in the Frying Pan. A 54cm mangrove jack taken in the lower river over the weekend. Whiting along the Noosaville stretch. Quality bream from the Marina, in the channel at Tewantin and in Lake Cooroibah.

Maroochydore: Trevally to 50cm off Chambers Is. Sand crabs are moving in the big tides in the lower river and at Godfries Rd. A few good mud crab throughout. Whiting to 35cm from the black banks, Chambers Island and plenty of bream 25 to 30 cm throughout. Bream and small dusky flathead in Petrie Creek.

Kawana: Some good trevally in the lower river. Big bream around the mooring on the incoming tide over night. Bream and a few tailor around the high tide from the rock wall. Whiting and flathead in sand basin. Sand crabs in the lower river and mud crabs in the canals and around Kawana Way.

Caloundra: A few trevally on the high tide in Pelican Waters. Bream and whiting on the banks opposite Golden Beach and off the tip of Bribie. Flathead and whiting in Bells Creek. Mangrove jack and golden trevally in Coochin creek. Whiting and flathead in Currimundi Lake.

Hamish OBrien with Dad John

Hamish O'Brien with Dad John caught and released this shovelnose shark/ray( shovelnose shark/ray, also called banjo fish has an unusual body shape, intermediate between that of a shark and a ray,) while fishing near Godfries Rd in the Maroochy River.

Offshore

Great conditions with winds variable about 10 knots becoming north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the early afternoon and Seas and swell below 1 metre, increasing to around 1 metre by early evening.  Reports of tuna feeding close in along the coast. Offshore

Winds will be East to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending east to northeasterly during the afternoon and evening. Seas and swell will be around the 1m mark. Massoud’s Reef produced quality pearl perch and Maori cod.  Good snapper, sweetlip and parrot from the Blinker. Snapper, Spanish mackerel and tusk fish from Sunshine Beach. Tusk fish, snapper, Maori Cod from the Caloundra 9 mile.

Noosa: Jew feeding around the headlands in the national park and along Teewah Beach. Good catches of bream, flathead, whiting and trevally at the Noosa River mouth. Whiting along the Noosaville stretch. Quality bream from the Marina, in the channel at Tewantin and in Lake Cooroibah.

Could be a bit of chop around this afternoon with southeasterly 10 to 15 knots, reaching up to 20 knots offshore in the morning. Winds turning easterly in the late evening. Seas  1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing below 1 metre around midday. Yesterday Massoud’s Reef produced quality pearl perch and Maori cod.  Good snapper, sweetlip and parrot from the Blinker. Snapper, Spanish mackerel and tusk fish from Sunshine Beach. Tusk fish, snapper, Maori Cod from the Caloundra 9 mile.

Joelene Hoskins got into several bream to 33cm at the Noosa River Mouth yesterday on pilchards.

Offshore

Another great day for offshore fishing with 10 knot easterly winds, sea and swell under 1m. Amberjack to 19kg on the Hards. Good snapper, sweetlip and parrot from the Blinker. Snapper, Spanish mackerel and tusk fish from Sunshine Beach. Tusk fish, snapper, Maori Cod from the Caloundra 9 mile.

Estuaries

Noosa: Good catches of bream, flathead, whiting and trevally at the Noosa River mouth. Whiting along the Noosaville stretch. Quality bream from the Marina, in the channel at Tewantin and in Lake Cooroibah. School jew from the ski run at Tewantin.

Maroochydore: Sand crabs are moving in the big tides in the lower river. Whiting to 35cm from the black banks and Chambers Island. Bream and small dusky flathead in Petie Creek. Trevally to 55cm from the cod hole. Mud crabs still in the middle river and the bottom end of Chambers Island.
