Local Fishing Report: Saturday 2016-09-24

Offshore

Great conditions predicted for close inshore with variable winds about 10 knots becoming north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon. Swell will be southerly around 1 metre offshore. Trekka 2 fished The Banks earlier in the week for snapper, pearlies, gold band snapper, moses perch and tuskies.  On The Hards there are snapper, pearlies, amberjack and trag jew.  At Big Hall's reef where there’s  been snapper in the 2.kg to 2.5kg range and a 17kg cobia taken. On Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and grass sweetlip. Between Coolum and Currimundi Reefs there have been Pearl perch, snapper and grassy sweetlip.

Estuaries

Noosa: Fishing Teewah Beach for tailor, tarwhine, bream and dart. There is good quality flathead, a few trevally, the odd tailor at night and bream at the Noosa River mouth and flathead, trevally and a surprise of a 130cm barracuda in the Woods Bays Flathead and bream in Weyba Creek and bream and mangrove jack and mud crabs along the Tewantin and upper reaches.

Maroochydore: A few good whiting and bream around Goat and Channel Islands and GT’s to and jew feeding around the Cod Hole. Plenty of good flathead throughout the river systemQuality mangrove jack and school jew in the middle and upper river Flathead and whiting from Bli Bli and from the mouth of Petrie Creek. Muddies are on the move throughout all the river systems.

Kawana: Great conditions for fishing along the beaches for whiting and dart. Try for trevally, bream and tailor off Pt Cartwright, along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. A few golden trevally and a few GT’s in the Kawana Canals. Caloundra: Plenty of bream a few whiting and good quality flathead to be had throughout the Passage. It is worth a try in the creeks for mangrove jack. Trevally and still a few tailor in Pelican Waters Canal. Jew and bigger bream at night in the deeper hole of the northern passage Whiting and a few good mud crabs feeding in the creeks.

Offshore

Good conditions close inshore with choppy conditions out wide and easing back through the day with winds blowing southwesterly 15 to 20 knots tending northerly 10 to 15 knots in the evening and seas 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 metre around midday. Fantastic conditions tomorrow with west to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable about 10 knots during the morning with seas below 0.5 metres, increasing to around 1 metre offshore. Trekka 2 fished The Banks on Wednesday for snapper, pearlies, gold band snapper, moses perch and tuskies. Quality jew at Chardon's Reef. North Reef’s got cobia, jew, pearlies and moses perch. On The Hards there are snapper, pearlies, amberjack and trag jew.  At Big Hall's reef where there’s  been snapper in the 2.kg to 2.5kg range and a 17kg cobia taken. On Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and grass sweetlip from. Snapper, pearl perch and yellowtail king at Caloundra 9 and 12 Mile. Seas will be 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 metre around midday, then increasing to 1 to 2 metres by early evening. around 1 metre. North Reef’s got cobia, jew, pearlies and moses perch. At North Reef on Cougar One charter landed a few quality snapper and there have been pearlies, moses perch and venus tuskies, while on Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and grass sweetlip from. Luderick and flathead from the mouth of Petrie Creek. Muddies are already on the move throughout.

Reaching up to 20 knots offshore in the late evening with seas below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore by early evening. Could be a bit of choppy northerly wind conditions tomorrow. Thursday on The Hards there were snapper, pearlies, amberjack and trag jew. Wild Thing 2 fished Double Island Point again on Wednesday for moses perch, snapper, pearl perch, amberjack, a blue Maori cod (released) and a nice red emperor.  At Big Hall's reef where there’s  been snapper in the 2.kg to 2.5kg range and a 17kg cobia taken. At North Reef on Cougar One charter landed a few quality snapper and there have been pearlies, moses perch and venus tuskies, while on Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and grass sweetlip from. Snapper, pearl perch and yellowtail king at Caloundra 9 Mile. Amberjack, yellowtail king, pearl perch and small snapper at Murphys Reef.

Flathead and bream in Weyba Creek and bream and mangrove jack showing their colour along the Tewantin and upper reaches. Mud crabs along the Tewantin reach and in Lake Cooroibah.

Maroochydore: There’s mangrove jack caught and released up river recently. A few good whiting and bream around Goat and Channel Islands. Bream, still the odd tailor and several giant trevally around the Cod Hole yesterday. Jew were feeding on Wednesday night with a couple of runs reported by keen young anglers, in area and up along Oyster Bank Road. Good flathead off Chambers Island and the Cod Hole and from Eudlo and Petrie creek mouths. Muddies are already on the move throughout.

Kawana: Try for trevally, bream and tailor along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. A few golden trevally and a few GT’s in the Kawana Canals. Real good conditions tomorrow with winds south to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable about 10 knots during the morning then becoming northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon and seas around 1 metre. Wild Thing 2 fished Double Island Point again on Wednesday for moses perch, snapper, pearl perch, amberjack, a blue Maori cod (released) and a nice red emperor.  At Big Hall's reef where there’s  been snapper in the 2.kg to 2.5kg range and a 17kg cobia taken. The cobia, by the way, went for a live slimy mackerel. D.I. has had on for teraglin jewfish, snapper, gold spot cod, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, moses perch, scarlet sea perch and mulloway. Conditions will be fairly choppy to rough, so defiantly best to stay in sheltered areas as there will be a solid northerly sea breeze with northerly 15 to 20 knots. and seas 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the afternoon. When conditions improve on Friday and certainly by the weekend be ready to fish at Big Hall's reef where there’s been snapper in the 2.kg to 2.5kg range and a 17kg cobia taken. The cobia, by the way, went for a live slimy mackerel. Has hadD.I. on for teraglin jewfish, snapper, gold spot cod, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, moses perch, scarlet sea perch and mulloway. Conditions will be okay for larger vessels but it will be uncomfortable for smaller vessels, so maybe  stay in sheltered areas as there will be a choppy northerly sea breeze with northerly 15 to 20 knots and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday. Estuaries

Noosa: There is good quality flathead and bream at the Noosa River mouth and flathead and trevally in Woods Bay. Also golden trevally around the Tewantin ski run and a few trevally, the odd tailor at night at the river mouth and bream in the lower river and around Woods Bay and the Sound. Flathead and bream in Weyba Creek and bream and mangrove jack showing their colour along the Tewantin reach. Mud crabs along the Tewantin reach and in Lake Cooroibah.

Maroochydore: The red fever has hit, with a few good mangrove jack caught and released up river recently. A few good whiting and bream around Goat and Channel Islands. Bream, still the odd tailor and golden trevally around the Cod Hole area and up along Oyster Bank Road. Good flathead off Chambers Island and the Cod Hole and from Eudlo and Petrie creek mouths. Muddies are already on the move with a few quality crabs in the canals.

Kawana: Try for trevally, bream and tailor along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. A few golden trevally and a few GT’s in the Kawana Canals. Bream, gar and trevally around the boat moorings and rock walls, also plenty of quality flathead in the Basin and bream around the trawler moorings.

Caloundra: Plenty of bream a few whiting and good quality flathead to be had throughout the Pumicestone Passage. It is worth a try in the creeks for a few mangrove jack. Trevally and still a few tailor in Pelican Waters Canal. Flathead from Military Jetty. Jew and bigger bream at night in the deeper hole of the northern passage Whiting Coochin Creek mouth, flathead along the drop offs and mud crabs feeding in the creeks

Offshore

Conditions okay today but with a bit of a choppy northerly sea breeze later on in the day and evening with northerly about 10 knots increasing to 10 to 15 knots before dawn, and to 15 to 20 knots south of Maroochydore in the late evening, with seas aound 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres south of Maroochydore by early evening. Wild Thing 2 fished D.I. on Sunday for teraglin jewfish, snapper, gold spot cod, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, moses perch, scarlet sea perch and mulloway. At North Reef on Cougar One charter landed a few quality snapper and there have been pearlies, moses perch and venus tuskies, while on Sunshine Reef, there’s coral trout, snapper, tusk fish, pearl perch and grass sweetlip from. Snapper, pearl perch and yellowtail king at Caloundra 9 Mile. Amberjack, yellowtail king, pearl perch and small snapper at Murphys Reef.

Brent Mansfield Mangrove jack
